Default What makes an Outlaw Porsche?

I normally feed on the 911 page, but I have a question.

I just want to get some thoughts here on what makes a Porsche an Outlaw?

It's about the same as taking a car like a 32 Ford Coupe and turning it into a Street Rod. You change things or at least modify things like the engine, suspension, interior and body work. It's also alot like the 911 "R Gruppe", you take an early 911 and make it look and run like an R or RS.
Several years ago, a guy named Gary Emory, who grew up in his Dads custom car shop, decided to do the same kind of tricks on a 356. It became known as an "Outlaw" mainly because the Porsche purists just thought it was sacreligious, or against the "unwritten" laws, to do this to a 356.
Now days some of those old purist diehards are lusting after an Outlaw. An Outlaw won "Best of Show" at last years Registry East Coast Holiday! This would have been unthought of only a few years ago.
I've owned two Outlaws. One was known as Bad Max, a 1955 Continental Coupe with a 2.5 liter 914 motor and was probably one of the most extreme Outlaws ever built. If you do a searech on this Forum, you'll find lots of pics and info on it. The one I own now is much milder. It's a 58 with a Dwayne Spencer motor with all the Shasta goodies. I think of all the Porsches I have had, this is definately my favorite one.
Hope this sheds a little light!

Robert is being a bit modest, Bad Max really was stunning, in concept & craft.

Then there are guys like me that went the outlaw route and wish they hadn't. But that was 13 years ago. When you hit something even very mildly things get bent. I still have the bumpers but had filled in all the indentations where they fit up against the body. I'll probably keep it the way it is but the look of bumpers isn't as obtrusive as I once thought it was.

Robert,

I have a '55 Continental Coupe as well as my "new" rusty '64 SC. Do you have any links to pictures of Bad Max? I'd LOVE to see him!

Thanks,

TC

If you do an Advanced Search and look for "Bad Max" inthe 356 disscussion forums you should find some pictures of him there.

I'll dig up the disc and post a few for you tomorrow.....

Thanks TC! I really Miss Max. He was a special 356 and we were lucky to have been able to help make him even more special! I sometimes wonder what the new owner is going to do to him. Only thing I heard about the car so far is that was he was going to remove the Exhaust and install a "Quieter one". The "Jailbird Special" Exhaust that was installed on Max was pretty darn loud, but no louder than a couple of Harleys driving down the street together. Maybe California (PV) is more strict on noise laws now than before when we lived there, Don't know, but it's too loud for him....

Default God thats a cool car

I was going through some old issues of european car and came across a few old articles on Gary Emory and some of his "early" work-the stuff he does is wonderful. The ideas, inspiration and just the plain old hard work that goes into the outlaw cars (anyone's outlaw) is great.

Some cars are meant to be restored, for sure, and some are meant to be outlaws!

Here's a BMW outlaw I built:

it was a 1970 2002 with way too much rust to be "salvageable" in the traditional manner, so we made some custom steel fender flares and turned it into this:

Its sort of a loose interpretation of the 2002's Alpina raced in the late 60's early 70's.

Default There was a cool shot in the Reg. mag

in Nov/Dec issue of one of Dink Farmer's outlaws-looks like an A-coupe with the full roof/A-pillars cut down to speedster-height. It also looks like it has about 20" modular Fikse wheels on it. Its really a cool looking car just in the metal.

I would love to see any more photos of that car, (or other outlaws!) anyone have any?
