hello, I just acquired a 1958 356a type2. I dont know much about the car butt it was basically free so i figured what the heck. The car is pretty much disassembled but the body is in good condition. the engine needs to be overhauled and so does the interior of the car. im wondering what the approximate value of the car is in this condition? and about how much money it will take to get her drivable again? i plan on doing most of the work myself. any information/advise would be greatly appreciated. thanks
the car,
the car,

It would bring a "pretty penny" if restored professionally to original specs. BUT, not as many "pretty pennies" as you will spend doing it!
This has been discussed many times about 'how much is it worth now' versus 'how much can I sell it for after'. And it's still the same situation.
Restoring a coupe is usually a not a good investment, monitarily.
But, if you are restoring it for yourself because you fell in love with it's irresistable charm and you will keep it forever and give it to your grandkids.......then it doesn't matter about the money.
Anyway, Nexus, you do have a pretty desirable car there, An 'A' is a great car. As it sits right now, it's hard to put a price tag on it, 5 grand, maybe more OR maybe less. European Collectables sold a rusty A coupe a while back for 6 grand or so.
You might consider doing an "Outlaw". You would not have to be so correct in restoring it to original specs. And if done right, it would be worth more than a standard A coupe. Do a search in this forum for "Outlaws" and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Good luck and keep us informed with what you decide to do with the car...

nexus, Robert's advice is worth a lot of $. "basically free" is a dangerous concept in an old sports car. You can start with a "rare sports car, just needs some TLC to be really valuable", plus many thousands in your bank account, and end up with an incomplete project, empty pockets, & looming divorce. on the other hand, the gaps DO look pretty good...

nexus, forget about the value of the car...think about the achievement of restoring a piece of Porsche history...to bring back this particular car to the road...it's an investment for your soul actually...will you spend more than the final value of the car? Probably yes...it's part of the hobby! I change my oil every 500 miles...do I need to? Of course not, but it gives me a lot of pleasure...
