Compare with the dash on my 65 C coupe:

Here is a picture of our dash in our '65 C. We have the same configuration with the Inner/Outside Thermometer (that's what the factory calls it). Just like Janis'

why do both gauges (yours and Janus's) have one needle pointing all the way down...must be very hot or very cold in the car or outside....

Not sure about Janis' gauge, but ours needs the "inner" part re-calibrated. As far as I know there is only one guy in the US that has experience with this old type of gauge. He quoted me $500 to rebuild it! It's on my list of things to do. Better do it before I have to send it to Germany to have it worked on. Hmmm......that might even be cheaper than doing it here.

holy toledo! Guess it's too much for Hollywood VDO to fix in CA? $500....ouch! But then again, to have that rare option fully functioning.....and relative to everything else in an original 356, I guess $500 is about right.

Hollywood is who quoted that price, but they don't work on this type of gauge. They told me that they know someone who can!!!

Harry,

Is the car you posted the one at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? i.e., is the car on regular display at the Hall of Fame the "real" Janis' car?

the pic i posted was from the petersons automotive museum when they had a display of cars of rock n roll. (the car that was at the HOF went there for the display).

Janis's cab was at the RRHOF from the time it opened until at least 2 years ago.. i honestly dont know if it went back to the RRHOF after the petersons exhibit or not. you could probably call them up and find out if its still there or not.

and yes, the one that was on display at the RRHOF is the geunuine article. it was restored by stoddards in willoughby to go on display at the hof as well.

I think it has returned to the Rock Hall, as I walked past there about a week ago and it was in the window. I assume it is the same one as before...
