Mine? JK, mine will never be for sale.

There are a few posted in the for-sales of the pparts forum now, there's always some in the back of the Registry magazine (worth the $35/year alone), eBay finds, etc. Just be sure you know what you are getting yourself into... very easy to get into upside down value situations very fast....

Are these cars extremely expensive to restore? I have had a lot of experience with restoring American cars, obviously these cars are in two different leagues. But from what I have seen in a few of my magazines the cars seem fairly inexpensive, as far as parts are concerned. At least that is compared to the 951. If I am wrong, someone please correct me, before I get myself into a huge money pit.
Thanks, Richard

I have a 64 356C in Virginia I might sell. I bought it as a driver but I never really got around to driving it or doing anything with it. It's ruby red and has a 912 engine. It's stored in a warehouse near Dulles airport.

I am gonna be pretty busy the next two weeks but maybe sometime afterwards we could talk if you have not found anything.

"Are these cars extremely expensive to restore?"

Richard, it really depends on what your definition of "restore" is. If you buy a rust bucket and want to take it to a national level Concours or buy a fairly decent driver and just want to freshen alot of things up is two different worlds. To fully restore a B coupe to excellent condition might not be worth it. It won't be worth what you've put into it when your done. Of course if you've fallen hopelessly in love with the car and you'll pass it on to your grandkids then it doesn't matter.
Investment point of view.....restore a cabriolet or early coupe and you can sell it for what you have spent, maybe more. Just restore it CORRECTLY! A "mickey mouse" job will be worthless. There are some really good 356 restoration books out there, do lots of homework.

Good Luck
Robert

Thanks guys, I am wanting to take a car with a good solid body, but needs lots of work. IE engine, transmission, interior, paint, and make it into an extremely nice driver. That is my style. I like a car that I can take out and enjoy. A coupe is what I would realy like, I know that whenever you restore a car you end up soaking more money into it than it is worth, but thats the game. Thanks again for the good advice. I hope to in the near future own one of these beautiful cars. I have always had an eye for the 356, whether it be a speedster or just a coupe. They are beutiful and unique cars, my theory is that a car is a piece of rolling art and the 356 is just one of the best ones.

uberXy - that one did not come from G&W did it? if so i might know the previous owner

Robert said it....a driver would be coupe from the no-rust area of the US (Ca, arazona) if you can find one that is not silly priced. most of not all will have some rust - it's just a matter of how bad and where really.
that being said - parts can be pretty pricy - depending on what it is and the condition. however i have seen some ads recentry for motor cores for $99-250.00 locally, trannys are a bit more normally. the rebuild is not bad on them (for parts)
check out HPC Research for the how to books on the motors (R.I.P. Henery we all learned a lot from you) http://www.hcpresearch.com/
At this point i would start checking out the registry and talking to members on 356talk (email list) where most of the knowledge resides - it is a linear list - and there is alot of action on it normally. plus you might be suprised what you can find by just asking them.
356talk is here http://www.356registry.org/356talk/join_or_leave.html

Cool

Yeah, I know of a 356 like that, my father's black plate '56 "A" , and like Steve Jensen, not for sale.

Seriously though, along with the suggestion about the 356talk list, if you're seriously going to get into 356's, you may wish to subscribe to the 356 Registry. That magazine has a want ad section, and many 356's have passed through their pages, usually not a rebuilder though... But the parts section may be helpful as well.... It has assisted me!

Good luck on your search, keep us posted, and welcome!

Black944turbo,

It's not the forum for talking about your Corvair, but I would like to hear about that. Post it here, or PM me the story. I kind of have my eye on one here in Denver.

Yes, it's all air cooled, and all good!
