Default flatsix 356?

Curious to find out if anyone on this board has shoe horned a flatsix into a 356. I am thinking about locating a poor condition coupe and adding a 2.7, 3.0, or a 3.2 into it.

Please no flames....I dont need to hear it.

Hi, just popping in here for research and dreaming. I have wanted a 356 ragtop for some time, but have not had the resources for getting one (time, space and money). Anyway, I enjoy working on cars and am trying to finish working on my 928.

So what's my point? One of the PA's at my wife's job approached her to have me take a look at his 356 that has been sitting for 20 years. We are in the desert, and it has been in the garage all this time, do it should not be TOO bad (I have yet to see it). He tells me this thing has a 911 engine, and he does not know what year 911.

I also recall seeing an article in "VW&Porsche" magazine on a 356 with a 911 engine, which took some doing. Point is, yes it is do-able.

I don't know which I am more eager to do: finish the 928 or see the next project!

I recall an Excellence magazine article, about 4-5 years ago, about a 6 in a 356. I've seen the car at 'wash & shine" in California Bay Area.

Buy a recent Excellence mag and look in the back for the past issues section -- there is info on contents of prior issues.

There are a few out there, in fact, a similar discussion is taking place on the 356talk listserv from the 356registry. LOTS of stuff needs changing/making, etc.

Default 911 4-cyliner in 356's

Dean Popolopolus has a 4 cylinder motor that he designed by cutting 2 cylinders off the 911 flat 6. He casts the new 4 cyl block and heads and puts in billet custom cams and crank. Sort of a newer 547. Does anyone here have any info on how these motors run? I heard Milt Milner drove a 356 with one of these motors in it in the Mexican Carrera sometime in the last few years.

it looks pretty hard to me actaully since you need to....

1. fab the rear engine mounts (easy enough)
2. replace the transmission with a 901/915 unit
3. which means you need to enlarge the tranny mount area
3a. fab the mounts
4. install the 911 rear suspension (should think about coil overs now, btw)
4a. fab all the mounts, etc.
the list goes on i guees, definitly not for the faint hearted - but a 3.6L would be fun once all the work was done
Dean's motors are really works of art - last time i checked it was about 20K ish - pricy but with a rebuild running upto 10K not that bad actaully - it requires a 911 transmission though, since it is a 911 case that has been sectioned..so more work there too....

Cupcar,

I've commissioned Dean to build me one of his motors, though I'm going to put it in a 550 spyder, along with a 915 transmission, and 951 turbo brakes. Not a 356, but it will be a lot of fun, I suspect, and a nice car nonetheless.

I think the 911-4 is a better motor choice for the 356 than the 911-6, since the 6 weighs so much more and probably changes the weight distribution enough for the handling to change. As you say, though its $20,000(+), its not that much more than a rebuild in absolute dollars. Built Type IV super motors can cost as much.

There is one for sale in the current issue of Excellence. $30k as I recall, and it's an outlaw car all the way.
