Default Your thoughts on this 356

It is at Collector Car Showcase in Long Island and I plan to look at it on Monday. I believe it has non-matching motor. Not looking for a collector car, but a nice condition example that we can drive and enjoy.

Please give me your thoughts. No interior pictures unfortunately. Is the price reasonable? Mileage seems low at 70k.

Does anyone know this car? Vin: 214111

You need to get it on a lift and poke around underneath. If the undercoating looks new, beware.
The passenger lower door gap is off, look closely at the door.
The hood looks tweaked, lower right isn't lined up.
Dash is not body color, was it painted by itself or has the body color changed?
See if they have a cardex on it.
Take a look at BAT, been a lot of 6's going through there.

What is the appropriate price range for this car?

Around the price offered is about right. I don’t like it frankly....keep looking. My humble opinion.

Ive been looking around myself. I need to get back in the 356 saddle.

Agree with other posters. Don’t get a warm and fuzzy feeling about this one. The hood handle is crooked as well. Keep looking. Check out the 356 Registry. I would never pay 80 for a B that looked like that.

Agree with others, I'd keep looking. It's not bad, but apart from the shiny (new?) paint job, and assuming it runs and drives properly, I still think it is a bit overpriced. Dealer claims it is repainted in original color (looks like Signal Red), but strange the dash is black (and looks like it could be original). The paint code should be on the plate on the inside driver door frame (Black would be 701 or 6213, Signal Red 601 or 6211). Carpet looks like a cheaper replacement and not the much better looking German Square weave. They say "1600 Speedster" engine, no such thing, it is probably a 1600 "normal" but clarify. Check to make sure the underside is sturdy. Probably should get a paint meter to see if there are any hidden repairs / bondo under the shiny paint job. Check the door and hood gaps, and for signs of a kink in the hood (might have been repaired when painting but maybe not perfectly. Mileage is hard to tell, speedo could have rolled over once so could be 168K, but maybe the condition with careful inspection would give more clues. Before buying, you should seriously try to find a 356 expert (mechanic or experienced enthusiast) to take a close look.

Also, I checked the 356 Registry, and there is no information on this car (which merely means nobody ever registered it with them).

The lack of the crease on the seat bottoms is a dead giveaway. This looks like a car that was fixed up cheaply years ago before these were worth what they are now. It's probably a can of worms. For that price it should be near perfect.

Get a PPI on it for sure. If there's rust, if the trans is non matching, what's the compression on the motor? Just looking at this car I would not buy it even at $50K. Join the 356 registry if you're seriously looking for a car.

Lack of pictures of the underside is concerning. Do like the amount of tire gloss they used!!

Way too much-especially if non matching numbers. A friend just picked up a 62 coupe with a 912 engine-body redone by Jim Kellogg. Newish interior. 50K. And I helped a Newbie buy a very nice numbers matching Silver S90 for 76K this summer. Join 356 Registry, get to know local members. As mentioned, join the 356 registry. They have a classified section and cars pop up all the time. It's also a source if you need a PPI done anywhere.
