Default Grinding at the Start

I have a 65C Cab- It has a fresh rebuild, and runs great! Its having issues starting

1. It began by just clicking when I started it...
2. I had the battery checked, its fine
3. I loosened and tightened the contacts on the starter and it started turning over the engine, but it was really rough, felt kinda like it was grinding
4. If I get the starter spinning it smooths itself out and will immediately start.

Any suggestions?? I have had the car since 1982 and I have just starting working on it, so I know the car, but I am a mechanical rookie

Default starting

IS the car 6 volt or 12 volt? Also what kind of battery are you running? I have a 6 volt Interstate in my 56 and I can't get the darn thing to start smoothly. I think it's the battery

http://www.cyberwerkstatt.com/Member...leshooting.htm Nice troubleshooting guide to use. Grounds, wiring, worn ignition switch, starter bushing and the starter itself can be the culprit. The last one I had a problem with was missing the upper hard to install bolt. Best to go through the troubleshooting guide to find and fix the problem.
