Curiousity killed the cat and it'll probably kill me too, but that thought aside I went out to the garage just to check my LSD. Hey, it's a Monday night, there's zero to do, and I'm avoiding snowblowing the two or three feet that's coming down right now.

On my first attempt, my LSD held over 100 ft/lbs without spinning.

*long pause*

On my second attempt, without the e-brake, my LSD held 29-30 ft/lbs and spun at 32+ ft/lbs.

I am in the process of changing my open diff on the 87 to a Limited slip. I am looking at $900 for the install the LSD, new bearing and new seals. I had to add another $230 for freight shipping. The vendor is Vertex in Florida. I spent more then this to buy the Quaife differential for the 86, and it was a pain getting the correct shims for the bearings.

Hey Guys,
While we are at it, do you guys think that it's possible
to adapt a Torsen unit from the Mustang ? I see that
they're selling real cheap.

I put a torsen LSD on the 86, lots of posts about doing this. A heads up if you have a oil cooler loop, the pump gear is different for the open and the LSD units. The gear alone runs over $200.

i just rebuilt one for a customer. there are only 2 clutches in the standard 951 lsd. they came with the 2mm clutch disc from new, and there is either a 1.9mm or a 2mm or a 2.1mm disc to choose from when rebuilding. usually you will only need the 2mm ones. unless one of the plates is really worn. the specs for the lsd on the bench is between 10N/M and 30N/M.

i replaced the standard open diff in my 951 with one made in australia, it is the only LSD for a 951 with 4 clutch plates and is rated at 80%. i also modified the gear for the oil pump to suit this LSD.

here is the diff i used... its the one on the right. i have no pictures of the gear on the diff at home but at work we do.. i will post them up later

hi,

torsen LSD are very good for motorkanas or trials(in between withches hats) because they do not lock up at all on back off throttle, meaning you can left foot brake or use your handbrake, if you cant left foot brake, to get the back of the car quickly to do a sharp turn. such as a 180 degree turn around a whitches hat.

for that reason they are not the best LSD for outright tracking the car because the rear end gets unstable on liftoff throttle.

where as a clutch LSD has three options. 1 way LSD, 1.5 way LSD and 2 way LSD.

1 way will not lock up on trailing throttle, 1.5 will lock up but not very much and 2 way locks up the LSD with the same force on throttle and trailing throttle. when the LSD locks up on trailing throttle is tries to keep the car straight and is extremely controlable.

sorry about the history lesson but i thought people might want to know the difference.

Below are the two gears. Left one is for the open diff and the right one for the LSD.

First off, what makes you believe your diff needs to be rebuilt? Is is spinning an inside wheel? I found that even though the breakaway torque on my diff was at the bottom of the factory range, it never spun the inside tire, even with over 400 ft/lbs of torque.

I once drove a 951 with a Torsen and was amazed how often it spun the inside tire. I suspect too much roll stiffnes in the rear was causing the tire to lift slightly, at which point all your Torsen magic goes away.

I think the factory unit is a great piece.

WOW
Talk about good timing..
Im just about to fit a LSD [ clutch type] to my S2 ..
Ive got a 88 turbo box which im going to use the LSD,+ the oil cooler off + fit it to the S2 box..[ the turbo box has an unknown history + the S2 box has only just been rebuilt ].....

When you say the LSD has a locking of 2way do you mean its a 40/40 diff...
I realise they come as standard as 40/60 diff...[ 1.5 way]..

So is a 40/40 [ 2way ] diff more controlable on track.????

Also what would the best fluid/ oil be to use...???
Ta.
