Have 320 mile on my 997 and the oil have already two bars down. Is it taking too much oil. Take the car to work five time and average 30 miles each way. Any comment? Help

Has it gone down two bars or was it delivered that way? 1.2 L of oil in less than 500 miles seems a bit much. I have 10,000 miles and no measurable oil consumption. On the other hand I seem to get lousy fuel efficiency about 18 mpg combined whereas many are reporting far more than that.

Mine went through two quarts in the first ~3000 miles and I think I've put a half a quart in the past 9500 miles.

I have had 3 new Porsches and they all used oil at first, but not that much. I do not think your dealer checked it or you might look under the car and see if there is a leak somewhere. Do not wait, calll your dealer and let them know what is going on.

The car was one bar down when deliveried and I don't see any oil spot on the ground.

My '06 997 S was two bars down at approx. 250 miles. The dealer topped it off so I don't know how much he added but I assume it was a quart. It hasn't dropped any after 450 miles.

I meant to say "It hasn't dropped any after an additional 450 miles". I have 700 miles on the car now.

The error factor on the bar gauge is at least one bar also. Mine will bounce around several times in the same day.

That’s an interesting point, the accuracy of the readout.

In any calibrated electronic gauge the readout accuracy is always ± half the increment interval. If the gauge is graduated to read out in whole integer increments, the readout accuracy is ± 0.5. If it is showing exactly 3, say, on the display, that reading is said to have an accuracy of 3 ± 0.5.

In the case of our electronic oil gauge, the increment interval is 0.4 liter, as this is what each segment on the display represents, and therefore the reading accuracy is ± 0.2 liter.

If the oil level is exactly between two segments, say exactly between 0.4 and 0.8, making the actual oil level 0.6, you would expect the gauge to flicker back and forth between these two segments, as in your case, because of the inherent ± 0.2 accuracy of the readout.

Make sure you don't baby the car. Take it out for spirited runs to create a good seal when the cylinders warm up. If you drive it soft from what I've read you will burn some oil over the long term. To date I have 3700 miles on my car and only had to 1/4 of a quart. I had the oil changed after break in, and I haven't had to any since.

I for one wish the car dad a dipstick. Understood that some of the drivers may be considered dipsticks but I am talking about the old fashioned way of checking the oil. I prefer seeing with my own eyes.

I agree with 996toomey...I would prefer having a dipstick, but thats a moot point. My car was delivered with 19 miles and was one bar down. I have 2350 miles and have used 1 quart of oil. Most of the consumption was in the first 800 miles.
