Are there any other cam chains available besides stock 928 chains?

I was told by one of the tech's at the garage where the 928 frenzy was held this year, that there is a commercial chain on the market that is stronger then oem. He was not name specific, however he thinks D.R. @ 928 Specialists can supply them.

Geez John, all you have to do is ask...

We have the Iwis racing cam chains at $35 each just sitting here on the shelf.

So what is the real difference between IWIS and stock?
Going to need a couple of chain tensioner pads to go with the new chains.

Now all I have to do is decide on which cams these chains will drive!

They slide down your wrist and tend to green the skin a bit

Nothing that I'm aware of. That's why I asked.
Looks like the Porsche one and aftermarket one is the same price.

We have the factory replacement ones from Iwis and the racing chains also in stock. The racing ones have all the stress risers machined off and are considerably smoother in appearance. The one on the left is the factory replacement and the one on the right is the racing chain. You will see large parting lines on the factory one that are machined off of the racing one. Much less prone to coming apart and well worth the additional money. We use them on all our rebuilds.

Does the "racing" chain enjoy a weight advantage over the stock chain?

Very slight if any at all. All they do is smooth things out like deburring a block. It makes them much less prone to fatigue cracking.

What could cause the chains to come apart? Even though I replaced mine, they didn't appearing damaged at all following the t-belt failure.

ALWAYS replace them after a timing belt failure. They have experienced stresses much greater than they were intended for by forcing the valves into the tops of the pistons.

We have seen some come apart on their own but it's usually a chunk of something floating around the engine that gets caught in the cam teeth and snaps the chain. Pretty common on 944S's...or a tensioner mount failure which throws a big chunk of something into the cam teeth.
