Cup Car questions
Can anyone tell me what the late 80's Cup Cars were running for front and rear suspension?? Springs, torsen bars , sway bars etc.
Are the parts still available (springs) ?
Were these options anyone could have had when ordering a 951 ?
Thanks

I can't vouch for how accurate it is, but here is a source of suspension specs.

Thanks all.
I was thinking of upgrading the suspension. I do some Autox and want to start
doing some De next year maybe. Was trying to see if the turbo cup springs
and rear helper spring setup could be considered a factory option. Thinking of running stock class solo2. Guess it doesn't matter if the springs aren't available
anymore.

i dont think that escort cup setup is as mild as you say... did you take a look at it? I'm no expert however, and considering your name, you might be right? it seems like they are sold with heavy valving, and setup for a lot more then 400/300 lb springs... and they ARE coilovers as well...

The stock Escort valving as designed by Porsche/Bilstein is over 600 pounds. You can have Bilstein revalve relatively easily.
The Escort cup setup is THE cup setup. The Bilstein IMSA Firehawk is also a race shock, but slightly softer.
I have the Firehawk on my ITS car and Escort on my turbo. I had Canadian cup Konis on my turbo before (double adjustable threaded sleeve).
Firehawk rear - conventionl non-threaded body shock
Firehawk front - threaded body shock
Cup front - threaded body shock
Cup rear - threaded body shock (rubber eyes)
Bilstein's body are threaded. Konis are slip on sleeve threaded.
NONE of the Bilstein 944 competition shocks are adjustable.
Anyone who wants non-speculation first hand experience with these suspensions, shoot me a pm.

I do, but i'm doubting your going to be around anytime soon... with the car... Where did you get the escort cup setup, what springs and T bars and sways etc are you running it with, and do you have photos?

I agree with turbocup, the Cup setup is only for race and really too stiff for a road use !
I have the 968 M030 setup (at 90% stiff) on my 951 and the Bilstein Cup suspension on my Turbo Cup, and the Cup suspension is way over the 968 M030... for a race use !
For street use, the Cup suspension is too stiff and the car is jumping everytime. A 951 or 968 M030 setup is better for this use.
Don't forget the aim of the suspension is not too be as stiff as possible but to keep the 4 wheels on the road and help to use the power. Too soft on the track is bad but too stiff on the street is also bad !

Listen, - I am telling you what is for sale now. The "polish" package is a new nickel plating that Bilstein has just switched to. Do you own any of these suspensions?? I have owned ALL of them, kido. Shoot me a pm, Turbocup, so I can tell you what you are talking about.

I have to say, they are both good. We are running 1:04 at Lime Rock in a LEGAL
(as in passes SCCA tech LEGAL) ITS car with just Firehawk. I actually think the Firehawk is a little soft with stock t-bars in the rear, but it is illegal for me to modify number and type of spring, so I can only change t-bar diameter.
In a more open class, I would use cup, but they are stiff for the street unless you are a weirdo like me.

So does anyone know if Porsche offered for street cars an option for rear
coilover shocks and the progressive rate 190-400# springs up front?
My reasonong for this is that if it was offered as a factory option then I might
be able to justify to my local SCCA SOlO2 club the rear coilovers and heavier
springs and stay in a stock class.
The M030 Koni setup works well for street but I think the springs might be to soft for what I do with the car.
I guess I'm reaching hear.
I heard that Excelence has an in depth look at the 951Cup Cars this month.
May this will answer some questions.
