Ultra-Rare 964 Flachbau Is Worthy of Our Yearning

flachbau

Cleverly called the ‘Flachbleau,’ this flat nose Flachbau is rare-air–even for Porsche.

Once you figure out what your buying constituents truly enjoy, life becomes easy. Porsche knows their customers like to shell out cash for unique colors, one-offs, and other low-volume models. And this isn’t a new thing, as evidenced by Porsches long and storied history. But this time, we’ll take a look at the 964 Flashbau.

Emulating the 930 Flachbau, which emulated the 930, the 964 version arrives at the end of that chassis’ production run. In 1994, Porsche was switching over to the 993, but for 39 eager enthusiasts in the USA, they could get the X85 option.

At $60,000, the flat-nose option was a significant add-on. But you got a 911 Turbo S to go with it. That meant 385 horsepower from the 3.8 liter turbo motor. Interestingly, styling looks quite similar to the 993, and represents the natural progression of Porsche from their roots and into the future.

Presented in a beautiful Midnight Blue Pearl Metallic, Ryan Friedman Motor Cars explains that Porsches extends unique touches for the X85 option inside, too. Blue leather adorns the entire interior of the car. And where there isn’t blue leather, there’s walnut wood. Quite an interesting option considering this was a time when brushed aluminum and carbon fiber trims were largely associated with higher performance models. But, that’s all made up for by the really cool plaid seat inserts, which are very much of the era.

Not of the era – the price tag. This example is $600,000 dollars, which is in line with low volume Porsche models. But quite a deal compared to other X85 models, according to Classic.com. When they do come up for sale, closer to a million dollars is not uncommon.

Additionally, the X85 964 Turbo S doesn’t have a specific motorsports pedigree. That’s not an uncommon thing, as we know from the long tail Porsches recently released. It’s also not a new thing. Porsche’s 964 Speedster models show that Porsche will make a cool car just because it’s cool. And the 964 Flachbau is a car that acknowledges the 930, while also showing what was to come with the legendary 993.
