Trio of Porsche’s Most Iconic Models Celebrate Birthdays Together

By -

Classic 718 RS 60 Spyder, game-changing 918 Spyder, and revolutionary 993 Turbo gather for birthday cake.

When a Porsche has a birthday, it’s something special. When three significant models have an anniversary to celebrate, you truly have a memorable party. Per Classic Driver, Garage 229 in Stuttgart hosted the event, which was a perfect place to celebrate. For the 718 RS 60 Spyder, 60 candles would be on its cake. Porsche’s 993 Turbo and 918 would get 25 and 10 respectively.

It seems almost outrageous to think that Porsche unveiled the 918 Spyder to the world a decade ago. However, that’s the case. Debuting at the Geneva International Auto Show in 2010, the 918 really revolutionized Porsche’s approach to speed. Nearly 900 horsepower emanates from the 918’s combination of a turbocharged V8 and twin electric motors. This car’s performance is a technical tour-de-force for Porsche, but in this environment, stands as the only one which doesn’t have a motorsport counterpart. That’s not to say private owners haven’t taken them to the track.

Also debuting at Geneva, now 25 years ago, is the 993 Turbo. This car did see the racing circuit. Being the last air-cooled 911, this 993 generation has always been held to a high standard. Considering the performance figures, the farewell to tradition was one of Porsche’s high marks. In total, 6001 993 Turbo models were made. Include Turbo S and that figure increases by 336.

Porsche’s 718 RS 60 Spyder also has a birthday. Appropriately, it’s 60th. As a motorsport-only replacement for the 550 spyder, it didn’t have as much popularity, but it sure had a high rate of success. According to Stuttcars.com, the 718 placed a very respectable 3rd place at the 1958 24 hours of Le Mans. First place was a V12 Ferrari. Second place went to an Aston Martin.

And the 718 came in third with a small but reliable 1.6 liter flat 4. While 3rd at Le Mans is significant, throughout the course of the 718’s motorsport competitiveness, it had over 250 class victories, too, with over 600 podium finishes. All of those victories were accomplished with a flat 4 engine that makes about the same power as one 918 electric motor.

With Stuttgart being home for all of these models, it was appropriate for them all to gather for a birthday celebration.
