Felicity Ace Cargo Ship On Fire Abandoned at Sea

Porsche 911, Cayman and Macan ordered by Rennlist members may be lost on the burning ship.

Last week we brought you the news of the Felicity Ace, a cargo ship carrying thousands of Volkswagen, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini vehicles. Reports this morning indicate that the fire is now out and a towing vessel may be taking control sometime today, but it is clear that the fire ripped through the cargo hold where all of the European vehicles were parked. The cause of the fire is still unknown, as is the full extent of the damage to the 3,965 Volkswagen Auto Group vehicles, but it is all-but-guaranteed that at least some of the cars have been damaged or destroyed.

Many people who read about the ongoing saga of the Felicity Ace have made a comment along the lines of “how terrible for the people who were waiting on those cars”. In our initial piece, we pointed out that Matt Farah had a unique Porsche Boxster Spyder on the cargo shop, but we have learned that several Rennlist members also have a car aboard the abandoned ship.

Audimotion’s Porsche 992

The first Rennlist member to point out that they have a car aboard the Felicity Ace was Audimotion, who has a Porsche 911 Carrera S on the troubled vessel.

“This is quite devastating to hear. My first 992 S had an engine failure upon delivery, then ordered a replacement 992, and guess what…my new (replacement) 992 S is on the Felicity Ace!!! What are the odds. I’m speechless. “

He later added this.

“My friend just sent me a screenshot of the Felicity Ace taken from a near by ship. The Felicity Ace is on fire big time…pretty sure it will be at the bottom of ocean soon or a complete cargo loss. I cannot believe it. Apparently the 992 was not meant to be for me. “

And then this.

“Manager of my dealership called me today and more or less said his condolences. Kidding aside, he and I both are pretty sure its a lost cause. Now I will just wait to hear back from him once Porsche contacts dealers about the next step. Pretty frustrating to say the least. I can’t lie, it has me wonderful if I even want to do this again.”

Nobbyv’s Macan S

The next member to announce a connection to a vehicle on the Felicity Ace was nobbyv, whose wife has a Porsche Macan S on the cargo vessel.

“My wife’s Macan S is on here. Happy not my GT4 which is in Emden waiting to get picked up. “

Later on in the conversation, another member asked if there was any word on how the dealership would handle this issue.

“They don’t even know yet if all of the cars are lost. It’ll be awhile before they can get a crew back on there to assess the damage. Not even sure if the fire is out yet.”

A Narrow Miss

Finally, tinkll1 stated this his Porsche 992 Turbo S was nearly loaded onto the Felicity Ace, but it went onto a different ship instead.

“Your post was where I first learned of this event, not the usual sources, NYT, WP, AP. I was trying to figure out which ship leaving Emden on February 4, the Felicity Ace (NYK) or the Glovis Sonic (Glovis-Hyundai) would be carrying my Porsche 992 Turbo S to Benecia, CA and delivery, per “Follow Your Dream.” When I learned that the Sonic was headed for Colombia, and the Panama Canal, inferred, I figured my car was on the Sonic. They departed on February 4. A week later, on February 11, I heard from my salesman that the car had left Emden on 2/4 on the Sonic. For a couple of days, I followed the Sonic and the Ace in my “fleet”, and finally, “follow your dream” disclosed the “On Vessel – Glovis Sonic” on February 11, a week after it left. For a few days both Sonic and Ace were in the Channel, Ace trailing. Then, I got a little bored. And then…. wow!!! I don’t know the capacity of the ship in numbers of cars, but the potential loss of a ship full of Porsches for the East Coast, is a huge dent in a market that is already marked by scarcity. I’m so sorry for the buyers who will be so disappointed. The allocations will undoubtedly delay anticipated production dates as Porsche replaces what has been lost. News is scanty at this hour.”

Now that the fire is out, a ship will be able to hook up to the Felicity Ace and tow it to port where it can be inspected. It could be a while before the condition of the vehicles is known, but with the amout of smoke and fire, it seems likely that all of the vehicles on the ship will be a total loss.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
