Porsche’s 356A Convertible D: Speedster-like with Creature Comforts

High performance with upscale accomodations set the 1959 356A Convertible D apart from other models.

Compromise doesn’t much sound like a word you’d associate with the Porsche brand, but even as early as the late 50’s, Porsche knew that stripped out, bare bones models only had a narrow appeal. Instead, speed combined with luxury appointments were better for a broader market, and as such, the Convertible D was born. “D” designation reflected the hand-built coachwork of the body, done by Karosserie Werk Drauz.

Speedster appeal stayed with the Convertible D, as it remained an open top model, and was powered by the 88 hp 1.6 liter flat 4 engine. A less steeply raked windscreen along with a washer to keep it clean, leatherette interior with better seats, roll-up windows and storage wound up making the Convertible D a more comfortable place to be than the Speedster, however. Image of the Porsche marque was better reflected in this up-scale model, as well.

Ownership plays a part in a car’s history as well, and this 356A was well-loved and enjoyed by its first owner. Within one year of being on the road, documents show this car accumulating over 6000 miles. However, that was measured in kilometers (~10,000) because this car was originally a European delivery, U.S. specification car. Exchanging owners first occurred in 1965, being bought by an Oklahoma doctor, who used it much more sparingly. As such, this car was more so stored and preserved, and remains in excellent survivor condition to this day.

Thankfully due to the second owner, this Convertible D still retains all number matching components. Engine markings and transmission markings indicate original equipment, and compliment body panel markings which reflect the same originality. With a well documented history, this 356A 1600 S Convertible D is like stepping back into time.
