Porsche Design Auction

A restored 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa and a matching Porsche Design Chronograph 1 will be auctioned off as a single lot.

Earlier this year Porsche announced that they would celebrate the Porsche Design 50-year anniversary with a Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design based on the Targa 4 GTS. Now Porsche announces that the celebration of that milestone will continue with a very special auction. “Offered as a single lot will be a meticulously restored one-off 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa ‘50 Years of Porsche Design Edition’ alongside a one-of-a-kind and matching Porsche Design Chronograph 1, which is an exclusive edition of the original timepiece from 1972 and the first ever product that F. A. Porsche created for Porsche Design in 1972. The auction will take place as part of Sotheby’s Luxury Week in New York from November 30 to December 14.”

Back in 1972 there was no Targa 4 GTS model. The closest equivalent would have been the 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa. And the car being auctioned is not just any 1972 Targa. This car has been meticulously restored by Porsche Classic. The Targa was taken completely apart. It got a fresh paint scheme to closely match what is offered on the 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design car. On the inside you will find Sport Tex fabric with a checkered pattern in Black/Cool Grey and the “Edition 50 Years Porsche Design” emblem on the dashboard. The donor car was originally a 1972 911 T Targa. But the chassis and engine have been upgraded to S specifications.

Porsche Design Chronograph 1

The Chronograph 1 – 911 S 2.4 Targa was made specifically for this auction. The original Chronograph 1 released in 1972 was designed by F. A. Porsche.  It was the first Porsche Design product and first entirely matte black watch. The watch going to auction is a tribute to that original. “The dial, crown, wristband, and case back bear the historic Porsche Design logo. What makes it truly special is the design of the winding rotor on the back of the case, which reflects that of the historical Fuchs rims of the Targa from 1972.”

Original design with modern elements is the best way to describe this special car. The 130 horsepower air-cooled flat six that originally powered this car when it was T has been replaced. It now puts out a healthy 190 horsepower in S guise. The brakes on this car are also borrowed from a 1972 911 S. It may be 50 years old, but the design and performance of this car is as thrilling as it ever was. “We chose this vehicle because the 911 continues to shape the Porsche legend to this day. It is characterized by outstanding sportiness and conveys an extraordinary driving experience. I was able to see this for myself during the final testing,” says Uwe Makrutzki, Head of Porsche Classic Factory Restoration.

The Auction

RM Sotheby’s has the honor of auctioning off this incredible lot. Bidding for this iconic 911 and timepiece will open on November 29 and bidding will close on December 14. To view the lot and register to bid click HERE. The preauction estimate is between $275,000 and $375,000. Not too bad to own a piece of Porsche history. But you should probably also budget for a Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design as well. That way you will own the Porsche Design anniversary celebration trifecta.
