Porsche 911 Turbo S Ruthlessly Drags McLaren 720S

911 Turbo S Video Drag King 3

Drag races may not be everyone’s tankard of brau, but this Porsche 911 Turbo S taking on a Mclaren 720 S helps make a decisive call.

I hate video drag races. Yes, they’re killer in the Jeremy and James sense. Like the WWF is to boxing, if you follow my drift. That’s why millions of teenage boys watch them repeatedly on YouTube (like those found on Carwow’s YouTube channel) At least it’s making a new generation dig cars, yes?

There’s more to a drag race than just flooring it when the torch comes on. Are the launch controls engaged and are the cars in their optimal modes? Did one driver better balance the engine’s inertia and the soft limiter threshold? Did the other pin it long enough to boost it off the line like Usain Bolt? Does either understand the best launch tricks for each car?

You love video drag races though, so maybe an independent effort is a better option than doing it in-house. Brand loyalty, you know. That’s how we will find out how Porsche’s mighty new 911 Turbo S shapes up against drag racing heir apparent McLaren 720S – an independent video.

Take a look at Carwow’s race below, if you have not already. It’s a solid effort, even backed by a modicum of data. Never mind, the Porsche wins, so all good!

Some will ask why Car guy’s so laconic. You’d think he’d focus more on those vital few tenths of a second. But he’s a showman, so let’s benefit him the doubt. Others may wonder if it’s really fair to compare an AWD car with one rear driven.

The Porsche blasts off as it should – you can’t beat all-wheel traction and Stuttgart’s 2.6-second zero to sixty and 10.5-second quarter mile claims versus Woking’s tardier 2.8 seconds to 60 and quicker 10.3 quarter bears it all out pretty well.

Some say the 650 horse 800 Nm 205 mph Turbo S chassis is now better sorted and that its biturbo boxer six albeit a bit muted, is omnipotent, indestructible. Others reckon it’s lost a little 911 allure.

They also tell us that McLaren’s 710 horse 770 Newton 212 mph biturbo V8 720S is incredibly fast, has splendid steering and impeccable balance.

Yet Carwow proves the new Porsche 911 Turbo S as the new video drag race King. Who are we to argue? It’s just a case of long live the King, I guess…?
