1984 Porsche 911 SC RS

The 21st and final 1984 Porsche 911 SC RS ever built is set to cross the block at the Broad Arrow Chattanooga Auction next month.

Ah, the Porsche Type 954. That is not a typo. We are not talking about the 964 or the 944 or even the 959. We are talking about the 954 which is better known as the 911 SC RS. It was built as a street legal Gruppe B rally car, and Porsche only made 21 of them. The car you see here is the last one ever made, and it is going to cross the auction block at the Broad Arrow Chattanooga Auction on October 12.

It is your chance to own a piece of Porsche history. Of course, that history is going to cost you. The pre-auction estimate for this car is $2,600,000 – $3,500,000. Over $3 million for a 911 SC? Has the world gone mad? Perhaps. But this is not your normal 911 SC that was produced from 1978 to 1983.

This 911 SC RS was created for FIA Group B competition by Porsche Motorsport. This car uses 911 Turbo bodywork. To save weight the body panels are made from aluminum, the bumpers are fiberglass and the soundproofing…well there is no soundproofing. The car tips the scales at a featherlight 2,160 pounds.

Pushing this car is a type “930/18” 3.0-liter flat-six engine. The engine was offered in two states of tune, one making 247 horsepower and the other making 266 horsepower. The car offered here has the more powerful engine. That engine is original to the car as is the transmission. This car has covered just 3,237 miles over the last 40 years. The car also comes with a heap of documentation including a Jürgen Barth report. Drooling yet? Well, there is more.

911 SC to 911 SC RS

As part of the homologation effort for FIA Group B World Rally the regular 911 SC needed to undergo quite a transformation. A 911 Turbo body shell was reinforced and seam-welded for use on the 911 SC RS. In addition to the weight-saving measures we already mentioned, the car also used thinner Glaverbel glass.

On the inside are “Lollipop” fixed seats borrowed from the Porsche 935. And the radio, power windows, rear seats, heat, sunroof and even the door pockets were deleted to save weight. Putting a bit more weight back on was the wider forged Fuchs wheels, larger 917-derived brakes, an aluminum Matter roll cage, and an underbody skid plate. The car could hit 60 mph in about 5 seconds flat and top out at nearly 160 mph.

Provenance

The car crossing the auction block was sold new to Van Dijk Racing in Switzerland in 1984. It was fitted with a hood-mounted rally light pod, radio equipment, a roof mounted antenna, and a Jaeger rally computer. It only raced one time. At the 1984 Tour de Course it finished in 14th place which was the best finish out of the 158 Porsche entrants. The car remained with van Dijk for twenty years. The cars second owner ordered a Jürgen Barth report, and a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate.

Additional documentation with the car includes “Tour de Course route maps, a factory Type 954 Technical Information and Spare Parts Catalog binder, copies of van Dijk’s Swiss registration documents, and digital copies of its internal Porsche Fahrzeugauftrag build sheet and a Porsche homologation document featuring information on all 21 Evolutionsserie 911 SC RS produced.”
