Porsche 911 RS Exhibition Goes on Display at Saratoga Automobile Museum

Enthusiasts can check out one of the very few complete Porsche 911 RS collections at Saratoga Automobile Museum in New York.

Porsche has spent decades perfecting its 911 range. Over the years, the 911s have become lighter and faster. The journey for Porsche (as you can imagine) was not easy. In the pursuit of creating the 911 we know today, the company drew design and technological inspiration from its Rennsport offerings. As a result of this, the RS models were born, and now the Saratoga Automobile Museum in New York is displaying one of the most complete collections of Porsche 911 RS models.

The exhibition is called Rennsport: The Complete Collection. For the uninitiated, the RS badge is reserved for only the most track-focused 911 models. The first-ever Porsche 911 RS was introduced back in 1973- the Carrera RS. Only 500 examples of the nameplate were ever built to meet homologation requirements. In other words, an original will cost you a sweet fortune today.

Architect, hardcore Porsche 911 fan, and occasional rally driver, Steve Harris offered a large portion of his Porsche 911 collection to Saratoga Automobile Museum. Steve Harris’ obsession with Porsche 911s began when he was just eight years old and got to ride in a 1958 Porsche 356 with one of his uncles. Harris bought his first Porsche in college- a 1967 Porsche 911 S in Aga Blue.

Harris not only collects 911 models but also uses them to partake in Ramshorn Rally, which is a 30-car event for air-cooled Porsches from 1989 or earlier. It is because of Harris’ contribution to the museum that makes Rennsport: The Complete Collection one of the very few complete 911 RS exhibitions of all time.

The exhibition will display many exciting Porsche 911 RS models, which will include a 1973 911 Carrera RS, a 1984 SC/RS, a rare 2004 996.2 GT3 RS, 2011 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0, and much more. Along with the rare models, the museum will also display a collection of photographs of the 911 RS models in the exhibition, which were shot by the renowned automotive photographer- James Lipman. Porsche enthusiasts can check out the exhibition anytime until spring of 2022.
