New 2020 718 Cayman GT4 Looks and Sounds Amazing

New GT4 offers a similar aggressive aesthetic to a GT3 at a fraction of the cost, without compromising killer performance.

The GT4 name makes its triumphant return for 2020 with the 718 Cayman GT4. Sporting a four-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine capable of 8,000 RPM, there’s no shortage of great sounds to hear. It’s no slouch, either. You can easily make use of its 414 horsepower to blaze your way to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds. It’s GT3 suspension and aero will keep you on track well beyond what seems possible. Make no mistake: the new GT4 is not playing around.

DPCcars recently put out a video of a few examples of the new GT4 playing on some gorgeous bendy roads, allotting us some beautiful shots to admire both the looks and sounds of these machines. Some complain it’s underwhelming compared to the previous GT4 due to the particulate filter required by new regulations. However, other clips tell a different tale entirely. While it may not be quite as loud as its predecessor, it is a proper high-revving Porsche six-cylinder with a six-speed manual transmission. This means, of course, that you can ride out every gear to your heart’s content, listening to the mechanical symphony behind your head the whole way through. It is truly symbolic of what the GT series cars are, and it is very much deserving of the badge it wears. Additionally, it allows a broader audience to have a taste of the pedigree with its lower price point.

The base price comes in just a hair under six figures at $99,200. However, a couple of quick options and upgrades will push it into the low hundred thousand range. While still not the most affordable Porsche, it is undoubtedly the most economical way to experience the bewildering handling and aerodynamic attributes of a Porsche GT car.

According to the DPCcar’s video description, Porsche acknowledged that they could have made the same 400 horsepower figure using a turbocharged four-cylinder, but opted to stick with the naturally aspirated flat-six to avoid turbo lag altogether.

Though met with some criticism, the GT4 stands proud. It is far more than an entry-level step into the world of top tier Porsches. It is a well rounded, fantastic spec track-ready weapon upholding the tradition its race-winning ancestors have been building for decades.
