Want to have some fun? Jump into any Rennlist thread and ask what oil you should use in your Porsche. Folks will defend oil brands like they were defending their own children. It is always a hot topic and involves many passionate replies. In other words, oil is a big deal. Well, there is about to be another answer to that age old oil question. Motul has been in the engine lubricant game since 1853.

A company does not stick around for nearly 170 years with out learning a few things. Motul is a well-respected oil choice already, but they are now offering era-specific formulas for those with older cars.

These new oils are offered under the Motul Classic line. Older vehicles require specific additives and blends to keep those engines protected and performing at their best. Motul Classic combines the latest in lubrication technology with the additives needed to protect an older powertrain.

This is not limited to just cars from 40 or 50 years ago either. Motul now covers more modern classics. Have you seen the prices of 911s from the eighties and nineties lately? If you own one, you certainly want to protect it as much as possible. Motul Modern Classic products has you covered.

Motul Nineties

Those oils offer high-zinc (ZDDP) protection and molybdenum (moly) boosted performance for these cars. Modern Classic Eighties 10W40 is designed to meet the needs of forced induction engines common to the decade. Modern Classic Nineties 10W30 is designed to meet the demands of high-revving engines with more modern valvetrains. In addition, if that wasn’t enough, they even come in cans that have a cool rad era design.

If your car is a bit older then that then you can use the new 2100 Classic Oil 15W50. This is an updated version of the Motul’s 2100 oil that debuted in 1966. This new version was developed for naturally aspirated and turbocharged original engines built after 1970. 2100 15W50 meets or exceeds API standards of the period and offers a better cold viscosity to reduce wear during engine start. This oil also received an upgrade in ZDDP quantity for added protection of common technical challenges like flat tappet cams from cars of this era.

Motul Eighties

If you step even further back in time, Motul has an oil for any car built after 1950. Classic Oil 20W50 uses an additive package fortified with ~1,800 ppm of ZDDP. Take a look at a few of the product descriptions:

“This provides improved protection for flat tappet or high-lift cams and high-performance engines with tighter tolerances and older elastomer gaskets. The medium detergent level also makes Classic Oil 20W50 an appropriate break-in oil for newly refurbished engines.”

“Motul Classic Oil SAE 30 and SAE 50 are mineral monograde engine oils with low detergent levels, blended specifically for gasoline or diesel four-stroke engines generally produced before 1950.”

You can easily spot these classic oils as they feature Motul’s historical logo on metal cans.
