Matt Farah Gives Almost Perfect Score to Cayman GT4 RS

GT4 RS

There’s so many great choices for sports cars these days, but the Cayman GT4 RS is the red pill Porsche needed to swallow.

Road & Track’s Performance Car of the Year awards isn’t the oldest awards ceremony around. But given the mag’s reputation, a win here holds a lot of weight. Past winners include the 991 GT3, the Acura NSX, the McLaren 720 S and even the Veloster N. It’s a mixed bag of any car with per

formance intentions, regardless of MSRP. Contending this year is the Cayman GT4 RS, and as described by R&T’s Matt Farah, it may have all the right ingredients. Farah’s “3 Lap Review” follows his usual mantra of concise and to-the-point features. And in this one, he describes the car as pretty much perfect. “It’s the right size. The right shape. The right power, right gearing. The right balance. The right brakes.” But of course, the main focal piece is the engine. Putting the GT3 RS engine into the Cayman has “brought an answer to the Cayman Complex,” he says.

Porsche finally put their best engine in arguably their best chassis, and it’s no surprise that it has won over everyone who’s driven it. And it’s not just the power. “The resulting induction noise is right up there with the McLaren F1,” Farah says. And that’s to be expected with a spine-tingling howl up to 9,000 rpm. “Who’da thunk it? That putting the air box in the cabin would be such a good decision?” Like Farah, we’re glad they did.

So what’s the one complaint? Well, since the RS is already known to be a bit brash on the street, we won’t take that as a complaint. It’s simply an aspect of the car. No, instead Matt’s singular wish falls in line with many enthusiasts. It really ought to have a manual transmission. Sure, lap times would suffer and the run to 60 miles per hour would take longer. But it would be more fun. It doesn’t even have to be exclusively manual, either. Just make it an option. But if that’s the biggest complaint, the the GT4 RS will put up a tough fight for PCOTY.
