Auto Design & Sketching

‘Auto Design & Sketching’ program is a three-part course where you will learn from some of the top automotive designers in the world.

Readers of Rennlist are no doubt familiar with Porsche Design. The design company is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. It was founded by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche who also designed a little sports car called the 911. The company now designs everything from pens to watches. And it may have inspired more than a few people to become involved in the world of automotive design themselves.

If you or someone you know are interested in following a career path in automotive design, there is an exciting new program you need to know about. The program is called Auto Design & Sketching. And while Porsche Design in not directly involved in this new program there are several lead automotive designers that are. And they will teach you. For free.

Auto Design & Sketching is brought to us via a collaboration between the Petersen Automotive Museum and Yellowbrick. Most of us are already familiar with the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. Yellowbrick is a global leader in online education and career exploration. “We designed this course to simplify and illuminate a path to a career in automotive design,” said Justin Wolske, director, partnerships & strategic initiatives for Yellowbrick. “High-level training in this field isn’t always easily accessible, but we’ve removed some of those barriers by offering the program at no cost and involving an esteemed lineup of contributors.”

The program offers a path towards a career in automotive design. It is lead by a group of illustrious designers in the field today. This group includes Franz von Holzhausen (Chief Designer, Tesla Motors), Ralph Gilles (Chief Design Officer, Stellantis), Christine Feuell (Brand CEO, Chrysler), Francesc Arenas (Design Director, Hispano Suiza) and Roman Yneges (Faculty, Art Center College of Design).

That is a lot of talent to have access to at zero cost to you. The only requirements to attend are a valid email address and you must be at least 13 years old. The course will be broken into three modules. The first is available now, the second and third modules are slated for release in December and January, respectively. To register click here.

Try It

Tough to beat the type of deal that Auto Design & Sketching is offering here. It costs nothing but some time and your email address. I entered my email, and I was promptly emailed a login and password to get access to the first module. It contains 17 individual lessons.

Each lesson consists of a fairly short video. There are also a few quiz questions or some course work to reinforce what was covered. There is a decent amount of information here and the production is well done. If you are at all interested in automotive design or just a bit of automotive history, it is worth checking out.

In 2019, he became a certified driving instructor for the National Auto Sport Association. His love for all things four wheels has never wavered, whether it's driving some of the best cars in the world on the racetrack, tackling 2,000-mile road trips in 2-seat sports cars or being winched off the side of a mountaintop in a Jeep. Writing for the suite of Internet Brands Auto Communities sites, including Rennlist.com, Ford Truck Enthusiasts, 6 Speed and more allows him to share that knowledge and passion with others.
