GT3RS Is a Surprising Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing

While a 991.2 GT3RS is fantastic in its own right, there’s something even more stunning about this one. Here’s a hint: It isn’t even a 911.

The Porsche 911 GT3RS is the absolute epitome of performance 911s. They are easily identifiable by their outstanding aero, including a massive rear wing. When you see a GT3RS coming, you know what you are looking at. At least, that was true until this came to our attention. When you’re looking at this particular GT3RS, you aren’t looking at a GT3RS at all. In fact, you aren’t even looking at a 911. Beneath the beautiful cloak of 991.2 appearance lies a 986 Porsche Boxster and countless hours of work.

You read that correctly. That white Porsche pictured above is indeed a 986 Boxster. It is the masterful work of Paul Lucas, who posted a full sequence of build photos in the Modified Porsches Facebook group. This is, on its surface, the ultimate in up-badging. It has caused quite a controversy throughout this group and the car community as a whole. However, one thing can’t be disputed, and that is the remarkable level of craftsmanship that went into this conversion.

Real 991 parts bring the concept together.

Lucas explains in his Facebook post that the car is constructed using real 991 body components and glass. Inside, Lucas fitted a 997 911 dashboard to replace the slightly dated interior of the 986. Upfront, the car has BC coilovers with the addition of an air ride system to act as a front-end lift for bumps and potholes. Additionally, the front brakes have a big brake conversion kit, and the rear brakes are to be upgraded soon. Lucas put 20-inch alloy wheels in place of the factory Boxster ones to complete the look. He even has a replica engine cover to go in the rear trunk because, well, that’s where the engine is on a real GT3RS.

The sheer amount of cutting, fitting, and craftsmanship that went into bringing this car to reality is absolutely mind-blowing to think about. Make no mistake; this is certainly no bolt-on job. The thought of the roof conversion alone is enough to scare us off, never mind every other aspect of this car’s construction.

Why bother?

With no obvious panel gaps or ill-fitting parts, it truly is remarkable to think about the thought and precision that made this car possible. One thing just about everyone asks, though, is why do it at all?

“I love cars and DIY/Home Improvements, so I combined both passions. Yes, I have spent a bit of money, but it is my main car – these can be used as daily drivers, and I do drive it regularly. I’ve never been one for speed/racing, so for me, it is more about the looks, but underneath the car is a Porsche, so it isn’t that bad. I am self-taught, work in an office, and this is just my hobby,” writes Lucas

Additionally, he adds that his intent is never to fool anyone. If anyone asks, he will be honest about what’s underneath.

What do you think? Is this build sinful or sensational?

Be sure to sort through all the build photos to truly appreciate the amount of work that went into this build.
