1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Art Car

Porsche 911 art car was part of ‘The Art Cars Project’ and got this fantastic paint scheme in 2013.

Cars, in their own right, are works of art. In many folks’ opinion, the Porsche 911 is the most iconic piece of automotive art that ever existed. So, it only makes sense that special art cars would be born on the legendary body lines of the 911. Sure, there have been plenty of other brands of vehicles that met the refinishing touches of varying artists, but are they this cool? We’d argue that they are not, for the most part. In the case of this 1987 Porsche 911 art car, it’s pretty tough to beat.

This U.S.-spec 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera just sold on Bring A Trailer for $86,000. Typically, we bring you these types of listings before they end. However, despite having missed the cutoff for that opportunity, it’s still such a cool car that it was worth sharing.

French-Canadian Artist Marcel Barbeau Is Behind the Design

Since 2003, The Art Cars Project has displayed the work of French-Canadian artists exclusively on Porsche 911s. This particular example is the fourth of only five ever to get the art car treatment. Auto-body specialist and painter Yves Thibeault paints each of the cars under the direction of the artists chosen for each car. This particular example was done in 2013 with artist Marcel Barbeau behind the design that Thibeault painted on the car. The work was done in 2013, and, unfortunately, Barbeau passed away not long after in the year 2016. Fortunately, his spirit and his artwork live on in the form of this gorgeous 1987 Porsche 911. Best of all, both his and Thibeault’s signatures are on the driver’s side quarter panel.

The car itself is pretty standard. It’s a U.S.-spec 911 with a whale tail, a power sunroof, and an upgraded stereo system with Bluetooth connectivity. Power comes from a 3.2-liter flat-six paired with a G50 five-speed manual transaxle. In addition, it sits on a set of 16-inch Fuchs wheels with a set of Continental ContiSportContact tires wrapped around them.

The sale of the car included the original tool kit, all of the removed parts, and the literature explaining its involvement and the origin of the design in the form of The Art Cars Project documents. The seller acquired the car in 2015 and replaced the fuel pump, and gave it a tuneup before listing it for sale.

Overall, $86,000 seems like a pretty decent deal for such a unique part of Porsche and art history. Sure, it’s not the most well-known art car in history. That honor would probably go to Andy Warhol’s BMW M1. However, it is extremely cool, and someone made off like a bandit with an amazing car!
