At 11K Miles, Is this 997.1 GT3 RS a 'Collector's Item?'

With only 52 ‘RS Green’ 2007 997.1 GT3 RS’ in existence, is it worth breaking the greenbacks out of the piggybank?

The 997.1 GT3 RS, like the affectionately labeled “last widowmaker” GT2 among enthusiasts, holds a special place among the more modern 911 fans. One variant, the RS Green 997.1 GT3 RS, is one of the rarest of the rare.

Now, imagine encountering one of these gems in real life, like this 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS  draped in RS Green for sale by Merit Partners in Atlanta. With only 52 RSG models gracing North American roads, this vehicle epitomizes exclusivity and allure.

But is it worth the hefty price tag far north of a quarter-million dollars?

A Cut Above

Heralded as a homologation specially designed to elevate the 997.1 GT3 for the track, the GT3 RS boasted enhancements that set it apart from its predecessors. It has a bodyshell borrowed from the 997 Carrera 4, this version featured a wider rear, measuring 2.5 inches broader than the standard GT3, to accommodate beefier tires for improved grip on the tarmac.

Shedding 44 pounds compared to its counterpart, the GT3 RS utilized lightweight body panels and a carbon-fiber rear wing to enhance its aerodynamic prowess. With only 1,909 units produced for model years 2007-2008, the 997.1 GT3 RS became an instant classic, paving the way for Porsche’s future track-focused endeavors.

Peering into the vehicle’s history, it spent some time in California before schlepping off to the South. One eagle-eyed Rennlist member, RapidGT, spotted a listing from 2012 for the vehicle at San Francisco Sports Cars in San Carlos, California

Saw this Kermit .1 RS at Porsche Monterey. Talked to the GM who said the car was on display, but owner would possibly sell for the right price. Car has 11k miles, PCCB, full leather, and some aftermarket carbon fiber bits. May sell it for $350k.

Was for sale in 2012 with 3k miles, nomex CGT bucket seats, and a rollbar for $120k.

According to the Merit Partners current listing, the GT3RS got most (if not all) of its maintenance done at Porsche centers. It also has PPF, preserving its pristine appearance for years to come.

Still, a 997.1 GT3 RS in black and orange sold just this past January for $225,000, and very similar mileage. Granted, this is a 2008, and despite not being as rare as the 2007 RS in green production numbers-wise, you’d be lying to yourself as a 997 fan if you say you wouldn’t give it pause for a bit longer compared to the green one–especially at that price.

Just food for thought, is all.

Immaculate 997.1 Interior

Stepping inside the cabin, the juxtaposition between the striking exterior and the understated interior is immediately apparent. Adorned in a sleek Black finish with luxurious Alcantara accents, the interior exudes sophistication and performance in equal measure.

Carbon fiber embellishments adorn the cockpit, serving as a visual reminder of the GT3 RS’ racing pedigree and performance-oriented ethos.

This 997.1 sports a 3.6-liter flat-six engine (M97.76), rated for 415 horsepower, and is an evolution of the one used in the 996.2 GT3 with the same Mezger design. Paired with a G97.90 six-speed (manuals only for 2007-2008 GT3RS), this powertrain was one of the last iterations Porsche used before the big move to the 4.0-liter for the final form of the 997 (997.2 GT3RS 4.0).

RS Green 997.1 GT3 RS  blends rarity, performance, and timeless design into a singular package. With its limited production numbers and undeniable allure, this RS Green beauty is sure to turn heads and ignite passions wherever it goes.

We’d love to have this at the office–but admittedly, maybe after a little bit of haggling.
