992 GT3 RS: The Fastest, Most Impressive Track Day Vehicle Ever

992 GT3 RS

The 992 GT3 RS sets a lap record and proves that if you are looking for a track day car, there is no equal.

The 992 GT3 RS is a brilliant track day car. That is not exactly breaking news, is it? You probably didn’t just spit out your coffee and think to yourself, it is incredible insights like this why I never miss an article by Joe Kucinski. OK, so it may not be breaking news, but seeing the 992 GT3 RS absolutely dominate on the racetrack never really gets old.

And as good as the Porsche is, it is not the only game in town. There are other impressive sports cars out there like the Corvette Z06 and even the regular strength 992 GT3. Is the GT3 RS really faster than those cars? Of course it is. But what is so impressive is that it is not just faster, it is an order of magnitude faster.

The folks over at the savagegeese YouTube channel recently got their hands on a GT3 RS and put former IMSA driver Britt Casey Jr. behind the wheel. The goal was to see how it compared on the Autobahn Country Club South Track. The lap record for the savagegeese crew with Casey Jr. behind the wheel was 1:27.240. That time was set in a C8 Z06 with the Z07 package. That Corvette has a 152 horsepower and 117 pound-feet of torque advantage over the Porsche. It didn’t matter. The Porsche crushed the Corvette with a time of 1:24.95. That is a massive gap around a small 2.1-mile road course. The extra 400 pounds the Corvette lugs around didn’t help it. But the appeal of the Porsche is about more than just the raw lap time.

Driving Impressions

GT3 RS drift

There is no question that the 992 GT3 RS is blazingly fast around a road course. And that is great if you get paid for driving around a road course. But most people don’t get paid to drive around a track. So, the car needs to be fast but also fun. You need to enjoy the experience. There are no trophies given out at HPDE events. The idea is to be safe and have fun. And the GT3 RS is fun. Mark and Jack from savagegeese get some time behind the wheel of the car on track. The laughter, the giggles, the smiles, all tell you all you need to know about what their experience is like. At one point Mark says: “This is the best experience in a streetcar I’ve ever had on track.”

How is it Done?

If you are familiar with the savagegeese YouTube channel at all then you already know that they do deep dives into the technical aspects of the cars that they review. The same is done here. They explain all the aerodynamic and suspension upgrades that separate this car from a regular GT3 and almost everything else on the market. The GT3 RS is probably not a car you want to drive to work every day or go on a long road trip in. But if you are attacking your favorite backroad, or your local track, it is THE Porsche that you want to be in. Scratch that, it is the CAR that you want to be in.

Wealthy & Well Connected

Besides practicality, the only real downside to the GT3 RS is that it is very expensive and nearly impossible to get. Regular people have almost no chance of ever owning one. That is a shame, but that doesn’t mean you can never drive one. There are places you can go such as the Porsche Experience in Atlanta where you can rent a GT3 RS for a reasonable price and get some track time in one. If you are looking for the ultimate track day thrill ride from Porsche, this is it.
