1970s 911S Targa is Nice and Rusty On the Road

There are many old school 911s on the road, but not many wear their age like a badge of honor quite like this gem from Petrolicious.

You see many old school Porsches on the road today. But when you see them, you usually see them exactly as they were when they were new. Very clean, collector pieces, not really showcasing what an old car looks like, well one car enthusiast wanted to change that.

Petrolicious recently featured a one of a kind Porsche 911 owned by Alan Drayson, founder and proprietor of Canford Classics. Drayson’s car, a 1972 Porsche 911S Targa, was found by him while searching for a customer car in Japan. That’s right, this 911S is a Japanese market car which Drayson says just adds to the uniqueness. Drayson was looking for a 1973 911 RS for a customer when he was shown the 911S which had seen better years. He had to save this car from the crusher.

“I want to just leave it. I wanted other people to see what an old 911 with 30 years of being off the road looks like and you’d be surprised when you see that it drives beautifully so whilst it might look in some areas of in need of a great deal of work actually it doesn’t and it’s such a pleasure to drive,” says Drayson.

The dirt on the car has been there for 30 years, it was off the road longer than it was on the road. While looking worse than it drives, Drayson says much of the rust is merely on the surface while being off the road may have saved it from a worse fate. While sticking to his goal to just leave it the way it was, somethings did need to be refreshed. When he took ownership the engine fuel pump was off the car, so he assumes that is what parked it. He went through the whole brake system, fuel system, and took the engine and transmission out of the car to give it a once over.

The result while may not be the cleanest 911s, but one that is most preserved to the cards the world dealt to it.
