Buy 911 in Canada and import to US? (low Canadian dollar
Hi,
First I'd like to say hi, as this is my first post on Rennlist!
I'm currently in the market for a 911 GTS, and will be based out of Seattle, WA in the next coming months, so I just had a look at the list prices for the new GTS, and there's an interesting opportunity to take advantage of the low Canadian.
The list prices are:
A 16k USD saving by buying the car in Canada, and this saving grows as additional equipment are added. I'm ware of WA having a 6.5% car tax, on both imports and new US cars
This sounds too good to be true, so I have a few questions:
1) Has anyone bought a new 911 in Canada and exported it to the US?
2) Is a car eligible for PST/GST tax exception when exported?
Thanks everyone!

Canada Porsche dealers are not allowed to sell a new porsche to USA.
Pre owned Porsches can sometime be limited to the 25 years or older rule.
Importation is also 2.5% when you do import the car from canada.

I just imported a 2012 911 Targa from Oakville Porsche. The process of getting the car through US Customs, etc isn't complex but it is a bit time consuming. If it's a used car, the import duty is 4% for born in Canada but only 2.5% for a US sourced car. Transport to Texas was ~2,400$ USD. You shouldn't have to pay any Canadian taxes. The only disadvantage if that if you buy a born in Canada car, the speedo, etc will be in kilometers, for example, instead of miles and you'll need a letter from Porsche NA that the car was designed to meet US safety and emissions standards.
The dealership will know about the new car issue ... I can't speak to that. They may also have a relationship with a transporter you can leverage. I had to get a little more involved in the shipping details than I expected but there might be someone at your dealership that can help wade through the details. Hopefully your dealership will engage and help you a bit more.
Hope this helps and good luck.
