Default Shopping for a 911

I do have another post going where I introduced myself, but the title was a little unclear, so making sure here.

Name is Jack; total gear head, and looking for my first P-Car - a 911.

Learning some about the car and the various years. I am partial to the 2005 and newer cars. A coupe, 2-wheel drive, manual or auto. I suppose the newest car with least mileage is preferred. Also learning about the IMS thing, and how it impacts the 06 to 08 cars with regards to serviceability, although the whole issue seems a tad blown out of proportion.

I am all ears to learn about these cars. If you are considering selling, LMK.

Tx Jack

Whats your budget that will determine what choices your have. I would not touch anything modern other then an 2009+ unless its an older Turbo/GT3/GT2 variant or 993 and older models.

Yes I do, in fact I am wondering if it is possible to learn how to fix these cars. I would not go so far to say I can pull a drivetrain, but fluid changes, brake jobs and flushes are things I already do. I also have a lift in my garage...

Welcome.

The 2005 to 2008 997.1's have a more robust double row bearing which can't be
replaced without splitting the case although if maintained properly there seems a
relatively low failure rate.
As Jumper pointed out 997.2's have a 9A1 motor.
Suggest you read up on bore scoring though.

Page 136 of the November Panorama has an ad for an Atlas grey 07 C4S in
Parksville B.C. that seems worthy of mention. Don't be put off by travelling
for the right car/owner combo as buying the right car from the right owner
mostly ensures the reward.

Join the Quest program with PCA that way to access the main and each
region's classifieds. Attend get togethers, cars and coffees, be patient and
enjoy the process.

Good tips Balu - I do love the process of looking at cars. I am headed down to the Mecum auction in Florida next week. Not many P-Cars F/S there - any that are will be beyond my budget. But fun to look for sure.

Thanks

I don't think it's a double row bearing. As far as I know the double row intermediate shaft bearings were only found in the early 996s ('99-early '01?).

They are not that much different than any other car. Pulling the drivetrain is actually a lot easier than most cars.

Everything is becoming such a pain in the *** these days . They really do NOT want people working on their own cars as its killing revenue.

Even something as simple as a brake job has become a nightmare with electronic parking brakes as you need a special program to tell the rear brake to retract so you can do the brakes. Its just getting stupid.

PFAFF Leasing http://www.pfaffleasing.com/ had a very nice clean looking 2007 997.1 C2 for sale a while back.

It may still be available. I have seen it and driven it, very nice! Ask for Andrew Taylor if you want to inquire about it.

I didn't go for it because a 3 pedal Ferrari I was longing for became available.

Older cars might not be your thing but they can be wrenched by the average dude.

And you just watch, one day it will be illegal to even work on your own car. Just not sure how the police dogs would find out unless it was involved in an accident.
