Default OT: Used Audi Q7 TDI (2009-10)

My wife is looking for a SUV with the optional 3rd row seating... I kinda like the Audi Q7 TDI.

Just wondering, doesn't look to be a huge price difference between cdn and US models at the moment, but a few used car places have what looks to be US models (Miles is bigger font than km on the speedo).

Are '09/10 US Audi's warrantiable in Canada?

Thx,
Peter

You could also look into the Mercedes GL. They make a diesel also.

I'd reco GL as well. Much more room in the third row and cargo area. Also, GL550 looks just bonkers!

Audi warranty should apply in US and Canada. Mercedes GL are made in the US so no import fee.

You mean to say that there is no duty.

Regular import "fees" will still apply such as excise tax, brokers/customs fees, GST/HST, etc.

Also keep in mind that the GL450s and 550s are subject to the Green Levy fees.

Lastly, MBs from the US require conversions by MB Canada in order to maintain the factory warranty. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, this can amount to $4,000+. I've only imported one GL years ago and, though I loved the truck, I came away with a feeling of 'never again'.

All that being said, I would recommend a GL over a Q7 as well; I'd just shop locally

Me&You,

Thanks for the heads up re: MB's fees for import stages, I hadn't considered the GL series until it was suggestted in this thread. .... We are still in the research stages.... My wife hopes to have a new vehicle in the next 8 weeks or so...

(We currently have a 2003 CRV (stick) that meets our needs (family of 4 plus a dog), which is paid for, has 254,000km on it, and only needs a EVAP fix to meet emissions... I've done most of the maintenance and repairs myself, (CV boot, sway bar links, faulty door lock switch in the past 24 months), but it drives fine, burns a touch of oil if going over 130kph. It gets 10.0-10.5L/100km day in and day out.

I think diesel is the way to go for a vehicle that gets 70+% hwy driving... I brought the kids and wife out to the local dealers and we sat in the Q7 as well as the Acura MDX. They fit (for now) in the 3rd row seat. The oldest was a bit miffed about the room in the 3rd row, but we said it was likely only going to be used 2-3x/yr, and for probably short trips... or if we were dragging their friends along, and well the friends can sit there.

We are going to check out a new KIA Sorrento today.

I need to find up-to-date info on Audi's import stuff.... Christien?

My '01 Box S is a US vehicle that I brought back from Chicago in June 2009.

Audi is pretty straight forward with importation and warranties (can vary from dealer to dealer though). I don't believe Audi care transfers though.

If you imported the Boxster yourself, the Audi will be a similar process.

Can't go wrong with either truck (love the GLs myself), but if you end up going with the GL, a Canadian truck makes more sense on many levels.

you should check out the Touareg TDI. they are great vehicles, but after 08 warranty not valid up here if from US. also no third row seats.
a couple years ago they changed import rules that if it is from US no mods required for importation, perhaps still required for warranty but the savings of no import duty may be good and if diesel gas guzzler tax shouldn't apply.
Good luck.

Thx Dan. Right now my wife wants the 3rd row for the half dozen times per year that we might need it so that rules out the toureg TDI.

I was actually pleasantly surprised w the Kia sorrento and it has decent fuel economy.

Will keep researching the q7 TDI as well

well a month later.....

Last Friday, our 2003 CRV was totalled in a 6 car crash on the 401W just before Guelph line.... $7900 damage on a vehicle with a $6100 payout....

so our car search has stepped it up a notch....

A 'loaded' Kia Sorrento SX for under $45,000 out the door, vs a 2012 Q7 TDI Premium w Sunroof & Towing package for under $70,000 out the door, or a 2011 Q7 TDI Premium w Sunroof, Towing, Winter wheels and Roof Rack for $65K....

Argh.....

Kia will be toughest to sell after depreciation eats each of those for dinner. 2010 or 2011 Q7 TDI may be your best bet.

***38mpg?*** is that UK or US?

Currently the trip computer is reading at 8.8L/100km after 200km of highway driving 110km at avg 110kph, 90km at 98kph avg.

We purchased a CPO Q7TDI. Great vehicle and great mileage, although I think 30MPG is what we see on the highway. 38 would be terrific.
