Great find. Not much has changed except the cars.

Boy that brings back memories!! First went by the track in about '64 when I bugged my dad on a family vacation that we had to drive by it! Did my first race there before they lined the track with the cement barrriers. The best thing is that the basic track hasn't changed, just all the infrastructure and a few more bridges (and one less)...

I also remember doing some corner working in the late 60's and we did stand right out there by the track. Yes it was insane!!

Does anyone know how the corners were named? In his in car, Roger Penske refers to the kink as "Friedman's corner" or "Freemen's Corner", and he calls Canada corner "corner 12", which I guess doesn't mean it wasn't named then, but how did it get the name?

Those videos take me back to when I was a kid, the family would make the trip across the state for either the June Sprints or the Road America 500. I'm not sure which, but we would go every year when I was young. Somewhere I have programs from the mid 60's with my own crayon embellishments. Now I want to go look for those.

Thanks for sharing - that was gool. You can see the front end of the Corvette moving around a lot at speed. In car video then must have been a whole different proposition!

I believe 12 was named Canada Corner because it was on the north side, closest to Canada. Sounds kind of dumb but I've heard that many times over the years.
Never heard the kink called anything other than the kink ( and I hate that corner! Thank God every time I get thru it...)

Found this after a bit of searching:
Tom Friedman was the first fatality of an accident at Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. His Maserati rolled over at the southwest turn and caught fire. He was rushed to Plymouth Hospital for emergency treatment and was transferred to Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee less than a day later in critical condition. He died from the severe burns nine days after the accident. He was a member of SCCA and had shown promising talent as a driver. Only days before the Elkhart Lake race he had said that it would be his last.
On a lighter note - those VW tow rigs were pretty impressive.
