Default 2011 958 - Removing the PCM..

I have a need to tap into the mutlimedia bus on my '11 Turbo. Looks like the best place to do that is the back of the PCM. (I'm adding the chronograph to my vehicle - it didn't come with one..)

I know people have removed the PCM - and to do that you must remove the air-vent louver assemblies on either side of it. What's the trick? The factory service manual shows a hook shaped tool being used, but doesn't go into specifics on how to use it. I saw one video (on adding android to the PCM) where it showed using a small screwdriver to release the two clips.

Anyone care to walk me through this?

TIA!

I discuss the tabs and shows pics of them in that thread. I found that the side ones were easy to deal with once I found the first.

Hope that helps you out.

VERY helpful! I had no idea there were 5 clips. The video I saw implied there were only 2 - on the side facing the PCM.

Thanks much! I know just the tool to use - an old walnut-pick, nice grippy knurled handle and a curve hooked end.

Now I can order the new center grille with the clock mount for the Turbo..

Just curious, are you ordering the Porsche OEM pieces, or an aftermarket setup?

Got an OEM clock on eBay for $130, came with a short stub of wiring and a diagram on where it hooks up (also found more detail in my factory manual wiring diagrams). Also have the stopwatch-countdown-clock - a gift from someone.. have to decide which to use. I suspect the stopwatch wouldn't me much good since I don't have a button to press to start it off.. I'll be ordering the factory grille for the center - with the clock/compass/stopwatch mounting.

Nice. I've considered doing the same mod on my '11, so I'd be interested to hear more about your experience as you get further into it.

Do you know if dealer software intervention/activation is required in addition to the hardware changes?

These will do the trick for vent removal, or make your own.

When i pulled my PCM to have it repaired I bought the Ford radio removal keys at the local auto parts store. I followed the instructions found in the following PDF.

http://dealers.automobilitydistribut.../PCM3.1CAM.pdf

If pulling the PCM all the way out be sure to place plenty of towels around the shifter as there's not a lot of excess play in the wiring at the rear of the PCM and I found it a bit awkward to unplug some of the connectors. Each connector seems to have a different latching mechanism as well.

Removing the shifter makes the job much easier. My linked thread does have the removal instructions at the end of the first page of comments.

I also found that the PCM cables were long enough to pull it all the way out, then flip it up and over to lay upside down on the dash (again, towel!). Not sure how well that would work in this case since he needs to work on the cables.

Excellent. Tells me exactly what I needed to know. Gotta get some small Positap connectors and get to Porsche to order the new grille for the clock.

Thanks all!
