Default Thump thump in middle of car? help!

My 08 S pepper is going thump thump under my gear shifter only when i decelerate quickly. Any ideas? Loud and banging. Like a tree limb is stuck under the car but up high in the middle towards the front right of center.....

I pulled over; put it in park and revved it up, no problem. I go along without accelerating hard, nothing. I punch it slightly thump under the shifter....

AFAIK: The midget with a hammer under the center console can't be anything but the cardan shaft.

Cardan shaft likely culprit. How many miles on your '08?. Mike

depends on if you're using dealer, indy or DIY.

It is your rear drive shaft ( Cardin shaft ) this is a common failure....

What you are describing is definitely a center support failure. If you get under your car, you will see a center support bearing on the drive shaft. It is attached to a bracket via a rubber ring. This rubber disintegrates over time, and leads to the sounds you describe.

Its an easy DIY if you have an afternoon.

Order the Vertex center support bearing kit, and it'll be good as new fairly quickly.

Going to the dealer will cost significantly more.

If said Cardan shaft- it'll only get worse. You'll be driving 25 mph in a 65 mph speed limit. If u leave it alone dealership or indie will be happy to charge you more. Mike

Fix it now!! As said damage will be catastrophic if you have a failure at any thing above a crawl.

Mine went at 68k. I went with the Vertex bearing solution and love it so far. It took about 90 mins to install, including repacking the bearing, with the hardest part being removing the rubber from the old bearing with a razor.

My guibo was new looking and the shaft(s) looked great.

Fix it soon. I made it 450 white-knuckle miles after mine failed, at about 75mph, but you have to stay off the gas and accelerate very smoothly...

Good luck with your choice.

Best,
TomF

I'm just hoping that's all it is. I ordered the kit. Only did about ten miles at slow speed after I noticed it. Will drive the 996 until the parts get here. I'm actually going to sell the pepper soon, but dealers want it for free just want to keep it perfect! Thanks to everyone for the help.

There's really no need to "hope that's it". It's very simple, crawl under the vehicle, grab the driveshaft and try to move it up and down, if it moves more than a very little and you see the rubber donut is torn you know that's it. Porsche (and most aftermarket driveshaft shops) replace the DS because the bearing/donut is pressed on the shaft, Vertex just upgrades the bearing/donut.

When I did mine on the '06 S (I went the replacement DS route) it was a real bitch because the DS didn't want to break free from the rear diff., I had to put it back together (w/out the bolts installed in the rear diff.), block the rear wheels, start the P!g and let the engine put torque on it until it broke free. I wasn't the first to run into that issue.

Good luck.
