I agree, if I had to guess it's some sort of neoprene.

It's 2.5mm of Butyl rubber.....not acceptable, for a car of this caliber!

What are the length of the zip ties? I want to order stainless steel ones but they come in 5.9", 8", and 11.8" lengths and I don't want to order too long because they won't be easy to cut like plastic zip ties. 5.9" should be plenty, right?

Also, should I worry about metal zip ties cutting away at the hose, even if it is metal reinforced?

Honestly, tightly-strapped metal zip ties is more likely to cut into the hose pieces than heavy duty 12" plastic ones we used. Since the maximum driveshaft "float" fore/aft is only 8mm....the zip ties merely suspend the hose pieces inside the bearing carrier shell, holding the center bearing steady at all rpms.

Default Great Cheap Alternative!

Thanks, Dilberto. I did this fix, per your photo and 4000 miles later.....it's SOLID. Zip ties and a stout hose is ALL you need guys.

Mine just went today at 128k miles. Good number for a first shaft considering I modded the shiat out of it and the car's been on dyno about 5 times in total. Plus I drive her like I stole her most of the time

Scary thing the bearing went out while I was driving well north of 120mph. Sounded like I was under fire from mortars... I crippled home, had to get off the freeway for the last 15 miles as all I could do without it banging was about 40mph.

Hi guys,

I am usually on the 993 section but I just recently started reading about the drive shaft bearing issues and the repair options.
My '05 Touareg has close to 170k Kms and starting to experience the shudder, I went under the vehicle to inspect the bearing and it still looks intact but I am sure it must be on the way out. All the earlier Cayenne's and Touareg's having the same issues and a must fix!
Interestingly there is a similar quick fix option from a fella in Germany:

I am not going that route and decided to replace the bearing with an after market one from Hamburg-Technic in Germany. ECS Sells them for $70US
It does mean I will have to disassemble the drive shaft to install the new bearing but all do-able. The bearing support is back ordered so I hope to receive it next week.

The above info is all thats available on the web. So contact the seller at kawemila@aol.de for more info.
I do know the guy does not ship to the USA because of liability issues. He will ship to Canada and charges 69,00€ plus 13,90€ shipping. (no affiliation)

That's ridiculous. His shipping charge is more than cost of the entire piece - including the zip ties!

That blue rubber piece would be good to have in case of an emergency yet still pricey, I'd say carry the cheap "Jimi" material in a emergency bag.

I just received this from ECS so I'll be rebuilding the shaft later this week.

When doing this, can you shoot some pics of how the CV joint comes apart and re-assembles?

I have a strong hunch I know how it works, but pics would be most helpful.
