Default resonators over a muffler?

i have a 1983 944 and here in canada its emissions exempt and as far as everyone has been telling me i can pretty much ditch all the emissions controls

so i'm planning on cutting out the old cat and doing one of the following

1) replace cat with a resonator, keep stock muffler
2) replace cat with a resonator, upgrade to a new fancy muffler
3) replace cat with a straight pipe, keep stock muffler
4) replace cat with a straight pipe, upgrade to new fancy muffler

or 5, and this is the one that i want to do, but have no facts to back it up

run a complete straight pipe all the way to the end, then where the muffler is, split the pipe into a fork, and attach 2 mid-sized resonators as if they were mufflers

the goal is to keep the car as quiet as possible without hurting (and preferably improving) performance.

and what sort of resonators should i be looking at for upgrades?

Default

Not sure how much backpressure resonators produce, but typically on an NA car, you want to keep the cat for backpressure purposes.
