2008 BMW 328xi oil leak after oil/filter change

I did an oil and filter change on my 2008 328xi sedan and used an aftermarket oil filter and Castrol GTX 5W30 synthetic oil. Added 6 qts and after starting the engine, a large puddle of oil came out from some area of the engine. It was not from the drain plug area or the oil filter base. What possible source of oil leaks are there in this engine family/type?
After draining the wrong oil and filter (replaced with BMW oil and filter), the engine doesn't leak as much but there is still a few drops going on top of the exhaust pipes when the car is idling. With the engine off there is no continuous drip leak.
