How to restore a Sherman tank - a pictoral
#61
OK, I'll ask a question or three.....
Looks like some parts are more rust than metal. what are you using to remove the old rust/paint? Aside from primer, are you doing anything to prevent the rust from coming back (some sort of chemical rust preventative treatment). Are most surfaces getting the rattle-can treatment, or do some things get powder coated or painted with something more durable (like spots that someone would stand/climb on)?
Looks good!

If you hadn't posted verification fotos of the tank resto, I don't think I'd have believed this. I'd have kissed that tank off as un-restorable....and a total night-mare to try and get back into shape. Very impressive work. It's certainly proof that anything can be restored. What a challenging job. Congratulations. Thanks for posting. Great work. If it ends up in a museum, I might go see it sometime.

I will continue with the pictures in a little while.
Yes, this is Sherman restoration #2 - the first one was in great shape, but was in Israeli trim - we did a light re-restoration to bring it back to American spec.
This one in the pictures was a COMPLETE resto - it was in BAD shape when it came in.

That's freaking awesome. You should bring it to a PCA concours event.

Truly impressive, Daniel!
Would it be rude to ask how much the total restoration cost is? I have a figure in mind and am just curious. (PM me if you prefer). I assume that if you are in the business then it doesn't hurt to make this public.
I see that you are machining some parts from scratch based on rotted out old parts. What did you do with the many rust craters in the body? Cut sections out and weld in new steel?
Thanks for posting!

I am not privy to the total costs - the labor FAR outweighs even the high parts cost, I do know that!
The hull was in pretty good shape, the pitting does not matter that much - but the big chunks where either filled in with weld or body putty. The preforated steel plate in front of the driver was done by the wrecking company to make a window that was still armored. We removed that and welded in steel plate to fill in the hole.
