Question Rear hatch struts weak?

So it seems I may have found another odd item on my GT4 not behaving correctly. The rear hatch does not fully open. I noticed this on several occasions that the rear hatch only opens about 75% of the way. I can push it fully open and it stays up but the struts do not open it fully by themselves. Most hatches I have had the struts would do the job themselves unless worn out. The struts on the frunk work just fine.

Maybe they did not take into consideration the additional weight of the wing and reinforcements required for it? Anyone else seeing this issue? I am having my dealer look into it...

I don't seem to have that issue. Hatch seems to open fully and struts are actually quite difficult to overcome when closing. I have to grab one of the wing supports and really slam it down otherwise it doesn't latch properly.

Good to know, hopefully my dealer can fix it. I actually hit my head on the hatch getting my laptop out in the Porsche service bay! We opened and closed the hatch several times and it never fully opened on its own. At least this was easy to replicate. LOL

Any chance Porsche installed the standard cayman struts and not the ones needed for the GT4 which I read somewhere are different (for the extra weight)?

Entirely possible, will update this thread once Porsche figures it out.

The hatch on the GT4 is like every other Cayman. It opens with the struts to its "normal" position. From there it can be manually pushed up to almost a full vertical "service" position allowing greater engine bay access. There's likely nothing wrong with your car or Porsche's engineering. It seems to be working as it was designed to work.

Hmm, never had a hatch that did not open fully including my Porsche Cayenne. The "normal" position you refer to is pretty low for access... why would they even do that? There is a trunk in the back that you would use normally (not just for engine access) so why not have it open all the way? Seems silly

Guess I will find out what the dealer says.

Have a look in the manual (page 25 of the scanned US manual that was posted), it says what STLPCA is saying. Yes, I did have a 24 hour flight on the weekend and will be picking up my GT4 on Friday

Hopefully the dealer will sort things out for you. I'm not very tall (5'7) but the default open position of my 987.1 Cayman hatch more than clears my head. The second position is vertical enough that I have problems pulling it back down.

I read that the dealer can configure the car to lower the windows an inch when the hatch is opened which facilitates easier closing. I know this has nothing to do with the hatch going up but has anybody had the dealer do this? My son uses the frunk for his stuff, the wife tends to use the hatch. The kid knows what to do (I've trained him well!) and the wife is so annoyed with the bucket seat entry/ exit protocol that she just plunks down with a sigh and it's up to me to jump out and close the hatch fully. She's not happy with my new car and I'm not happy about her being in it so we're seeing eye to eye on that. Just that she wants to do stuff and I'm busy doing break-in. 504 miles and counting....

Yup, the manual lists two opening positions for the hatch. So, it doesn't open up all at once. It has saved me from hitting the rear spoiler accidentally against something low hanging.

I would agree that mine seems "sluggish" to open and doesn't open as high as any other hatchback I've owned.

It does not open anywhere near as much as a 987. Does not seems faulty, just different.
Mind you I did try to force it open more on the second stop point.

I think this is the way its designed to avoid hitting items with the tall wing.

I was in a parking lot in Liege and I watched as the wing almost hit an extremely low hanging beam. Luckily I caught it in time, but I would imagine the hatch is designed to help prevent this from happening to an extent.

Confirmed, working as designed. Just have to remember to push that thing up next time I am using the rear trunk. LOL
