Alpine/Mountain Pass
Would be interested in hearing comments/reviews on favorite mountain passes during EDs. Would like to do an alpine tour on next Ed but want to avoid the mountain passes where your driving up what looks to be a golf cart path - sharing the path with buses travelling the other way! Do you have favorites and are there ones you would avoid? Thanks.

Stelvio. My favorite. And absolutely amazing. Well maintained road. Gaviapass and Passo Di Giau I would not even do with a four wheeler. Passo Di Giau was a scary road one lane and horrible gravel surface.

In Austria - the Nockalm, Gelos, and GrossGlocker Passes in that order. Stay in Zell am See at the Schloss Prielau (owned by Wolfgang Porsche) and "visit" the Porsche family complex Schuttgut on Schuttgutweg. Gmund is not far away either.

Great info - thanks! Definitely want to stay away from Gaviapass and Passo Di Giau! Any favorite hotels?

I did Furka Stelvio, Umbrail, and Fluela. I put them in the order that I liked them. Here are some videos I made of the top two.
I'm doing an ED next year again but this time in a 911 and heading to Romania. I don't like doing the same thing twice.

If you make down to southern France the route de Napoleon is spectacular! It is miles and miles of long sweeping "s" curves through the French alps.... Did on a weekday in Septembet last year... No one on the road and you can really open it up.

As CJ mentioned you can take the Grand St. Bernard or go across on the hwy into Aosta . Also, you can head into France to Chamonix and the road is very nice (pictured from the swiss side). Verbier also offers a nice 8.5km climb into town from the base- about 45 min. from Martigny, 1hr from Chateau de Chillon (pictured), 2h to geneva.
The entire ski season is normally rented by 1 person. During the summer we usually use it for a month total btw family members. Leaving 2-3 months for my car friends in peak summer season- another 2 in shoulder seasons when Verbier is somewhat on vacation although enough restaurants are open as to not be a problem.
Come visit Verbier!!
(PS: We also own a world class travel agency via my mom Christine (a Londoner by birth)- we've done a few euro delivery vacations as well- send a pm if you'd like some help.)
