SmartyCam HD 2.1 and QuickTime

I don't know if Apple will change their stuff for some "small" Italian company that decides to write weird channels in MOV files. My guess is they will have to store this stuff in a separate file next to the MOV file.

100% sure it will. You are removing the data that would allow the logger data to sync with the video.

So by the way, this problem is allegedly fixed as of a SmartyCam firmware release from 10/24/17.

To make this work, the latest firmware release (.70) adds an option under Menu>Settings>Video Set and at the bottom, either Metadata:NO (default, allows playback in the LATEST version of QuickTime) or Metadata:YES (allows side by side comparison in Race Studio 3 and in Joris Mans excellent program, but breaks QuickTime). The simple act of updating the firmware will set the default value to NO and QuickTime playback will work.
This will need to be changed when Race Studio 3 Analysis is updated to pull up synced video within the analysis window, as that metadata is used to sync the video with the data file. But that's a ways off yet.
Of course, IF you use VLC Player, it doesn't matter...

IF the synced functionality is added in the analysis program, and the user is equipped with the latest generation of hardware (EVO4S/EVO5/MXL2/MXG/MXS), and the metadata is turned OFF, which it IS by default through the firmware upgrade, the auto-sync feature won't likely work for files and video recorded NOW, with the metadata not included in the file.
THIS is why I prefer NO workaround, but instead turning the metadata ON and using a free, open source and much more robust media player, VLC Player.
Then, when this functionality IS enabled, I will be able to go back to my legacy files and videos and have them match up, if my suppositions are correct...

So the release notes I linked above imply something different.
.66 release notes imply that you can disable metadata to work around the problem.
.70 release notes imply that they figured out how to correctly insert the metadata so that the current version Quicktime doesn't barf on it.
I can't test it because I noticed this firmware update the day after my last track day last Friday.
VLC is a bit of a UI mess, IMHO.

Win10 Movies app was fixed in .68, IIRC
Quicktime in Sierra and High Sierra was fixed in .70
I haven’t tested, either.
But I’m at VIR for the next three days, so I’m sure I’ll find out.

I recently "upgraded" to mojave, and now my QT files from SCHD don't work without "conversion" which adds an extra step.
I'm using SmartConverter (a free app) which does the job without too much additional time, but I miss having the ability to just click on a file and play it directly using quicktime.
Looks like (above thread) there was some movement to upgrade the SCHD software: is there a step by step guide for how to do that?
Thanks, A.

Dr911, I think you mean firmware, or the device instructions that tell the hardware how to operate and function.
I would uodate date your RaceStudio3 app on your laptop to the latest software and firmware releases using the blue cloud with the arrow facing down on the top right corner of the RS3 screen.
Then, connect your camera with an SD card in it using a USB cable, turn it on. Then next to the camera serial number on the left half of the screen under Connected Devices, there will be a blue box with white circular arrows inside it. Click on that to update the firmware and follow directions on the camera screen to restart.
Then, it may work! I use VLC instead of QT, so I haven’t tested in Mojave, yet.
