Second Gear Randomly Popping Out
#3
Not on my 997 mk1 gt3 which has 17500miles on it but from what i've heard its not always a good sign. usually worn sychro's in gear box! Do you track your car much, or have missed a gear badly?

Happened on mine -- got progressively worse over first 5,000 miles. First, only happened when cold and on incline or under braking, then began happening in other situations.
Dealer replaced transmission under warranty -- it's about 18k -- then wanted me to bring the car back in to "upload" info to Porsche (which they said they forgot to do). I asked for a letter from the GM stating they would not try to charge me for the new transmission once they got possession of the car again. Then, they called back later saying "don't worry, we've got it all worked out with Porsche."

It's amazing how much info lurks behind the scenes on rennlist. When I brought the coolant fitting issue to light back in 2010, I thought I was the only one and now we have a sticky. I'd never heard of the 2nd gear pop-out issue affecting the 997 GT-series cars. I wonder if there's a better way to put info out there without fear of annoying someone at Porsche or the local dealership?

It's happened on mine 3-4 times now, seems to be when slowing down. I have 4k miles now. I'll take it to the dealer and see what they say.

Same here. Has happened to me about 10 times so far. Used to happen only when the tranny's cold, but this past weekend it just popped out on me in the middle of city-speed traffic...

I was disheartened to see this thread pop up. I formally owned a 996 Turbo and while I was lucky to have never had the issue, there were many who had the problem on those cars. I was under the impression it was really only a 996TT issues -- guess not. Bummer.
Search the 996 TT forum if you want strings and strings of this issue. Make sure you take care of shifting into 2nd; make absolutely sure you've put the gear level fully into gear and if there is a hint of this happening to your car and you are under warranty -- get to the dealer and start the process. Some have had big fights on their hands in getting things paid for by Porsche. In fact, my local dealer denies that there is even an issue.
Once this problem crops up, it will only get worse and requires to be opened up to fix. My understanding is that the g-Box detent is really something to be installed prior to issues, but worth a try -- pretty cheap.

I had the same in a BMW. They replaced the tranny and the replacement tranny as it had the same problem within a week. It is easier, cheaper, and better for diagnostics.

OK, I may have some more info on the issue. I was having the same thing starting to happen so I took it to the dealer. Initially, they replaced the stock detent but no help. Apparently there is a misalignment between the main gear shaft and the first and second gears. The solution is replacement of these with a matched set and not replacement of the whole transmission. I would assume that with the proper alignment, the problem should not recur. Car is not back yet but I am very pleased so far with how Porsche is handling it. Will update when I get the car back.

My car shifts like sh*t .... brought the car to dealer 3 weeks ago, as my car had check engine light due to bad thermostat, and also my front lift wasn't working (as usual), so I complained about the tranny and they basically told they can't do anything, only if I authorize (that means out of my pocket) so I told them, when I have a hole in the tranny I'll bring the car back and maybe I can get them to fix it.
