Excessive Oil Consumption - its not just us, its a thing accross Makes

Burning Brakes
I am convinced the pressure on car manufacturers by regulators to maximise fuel consumption is the elephant in the room. By using weaker sprung rings there is less pressure on the cylinder sidewalls consequently friction is reduced. Variable manufacturing tolerances of ring and cylinder bore sizes causes some engines to let more oil into the combustion chamber.

Both of my mezger motors burn less than a quart per 3k miles.

Odd, as I thought break in would have been well over with at 26k.
Peace,

My 2012 S bought with 300 miles on it new uses no oil between changes about 4000 miles for me which is once a year. I kinda think it should use a little but it doesn't. Break in ? Well I break in new cars the same way I have for the last 50 years. Full power right from the start. Pay no attention to RPM's other that don't exceed rev limit. Don't keep at any RPM for long time. Let off gas to create upper CYL lube. YMMV

My 2 2005 C2Ss burn about 0.7 to 1 qt every 5000 miles, which seems fine to me based on the performance they deliver.

Bought the 996 with 37k on it...drove it daily...no oil usuage beyond maybe 1/3 quart in 4000 miles. Bought the 997 with 69k miles...so far no sign of any oil usuage in first 1000 miles. Since I didn't break in either engine I can't say how they were treated. However Porsche does give advice on how they would like to see the engines broken in...and I would take their word for it.

Just did the annual oil change today (with the water pump replacement).
About 4K miles since the last oil change, burned maybe 1/4 quart.
If engines are "OK" to burn a quart every 389 miles....than why even change the oil ? You're burning it quicker than it wears out! (just kidding).

I think some of it is luck of the draw. I think the majority of the 997 and 991 engines use very little oil. I owned three 997's, the last one being a 2012 GTS, the first two were 997.1 S. None of them consumed any oil between annual changes. Maybe I shouldn't say not any, but certainly less then a half quart, and probably less. I did not put many miles on them, maybe 7,000 - 8,000 miles/year. I currently have a 991 GTS, and so far, it has not shown any signs of oil consumption. I only have 1,000 miles on it, but if it is going to use any, it would most likely show up by now.

Surprised the MINI Cooper S isn't on the list....mine was "normal" at a quart for about 750 miles (only a 5 quart sump). The idiot light for low oil was more of a death light as it comes on when you are about 2.5 quarts down just after the engine grenades......

I usually go through one quart every 2,500 miles or so on my 997, so that extra quart or so that you get when you order a case of Gibbs DT40 comes in handy for top-ups between every 5,000 mile service. Not bad for having forged pistons. My '92 Eagle Talon TSi AWD track car will burn about one quart every 3,000 street miles, or a half quart every other track day.
My previous R53 MINI Cooper S went through about one quart every 5,000 miles. Oil was changed every 7,500 miles.

Mine continues to use oil like it did from day one--roughly a quart every thousand miles. When driving it in Europe breaking it in I wound up adding three quarts of oil to it for the 3200 miles I drove it over there.
Today, with a bit over 95,000 miles on it, the consumption rate has not changed at all.
Many believe this is a function of a "tolerance stack." Imagine each piece that impacts oil usage is on the loose edge of its manufacturing specs--and by the luck of the draw, every piece that has an impact on oil usage is on the loose edge--the result is a higher oil burn rate than normal.
I've broken in plenty of Porsche engines--mostly air/oil cooled, and they rarely used oil. This puppy is like a 2-stroke engine when it comes to oil.
At least I know that the oil in it is always fresh!
