I prefer the V1 for its sensitivity, accuracy and simplicity focus. I want real time radar/laser tool to heighten my own situational awareness. When I drive I focus on driving and have no time to pay attention to apps. I find Waze's real-time information spotty at best and non-existent in most of the roads I drive. I can see Waze useful on lazy/long interstate runs where a co-pilot/passenger operates the app, and actually participates adding info to the app (the latter is essential for the app to work).

Notes:
* The current V1 version gives me nary a false alarm in suburban environments - to accomplish that it has to be profiled correctly.
* I am only interested in portable units which I know how to use as a tool and can carry from car, to car, to car. I do not want to mess with custom mounted permanent units.
* For the record I do not own VR stock, I'm just a long time satisfied customer.

Nothing else measures up to the V1?! That is erroneous.

While I agree that this is a unique function of the V1, it is the only "benefit" that is seemingly valued and routinely mentioned as the reason for purchasing the V1.

In fact, the Escort warnings will also provide some sense of where the threat is located as the warning sounds will decrease / increase when moving towards/ away from the threat.

As was mentioned, this matter has been discussed frequently and there are V1 and Escort camps. It is probably best to read reviews such as the following:

...
I must clarify... as a person who spent/spends his life dealing with measuring instruments, for me... the V1 device and its UI is it. It never let me down. I have been part of situations (as a passenger) where different detectors were in use and the results were not pretty. YMMV.

Valentine 1 for me.

I'm am former naval aviation. A-6 Intruder B/N. SAFETY and threat location, quantity and threat level are important to me.

I hold the majority of LEO in high regard. I hold their leadership who view traffic tickets as a revenue stream in very low regard. I wish I could cruise at speeds reasonable for the conditions knowing that I would not win "their" lottery. That is not going to happen. Using the Valentine, I change the odds to my favor and it is a great safety device as I am easing back long before many are.

Pick your detector, maintain a good look out doctrine, use it wisely and SAFELY.

Agree that WAZE is extremely useful as long as enough Wazers are on the road.

Found on a trip back from FL to PA that police (or someone) seemed to be posting a lot of police presence that wasn't there. Have seen a few news reports that police are wise to WAZE and some use it to their advantage.

More often than not it worked. Difficult to get full benefit if solo but I opt for alerts through Bluetooth and it tells me what I need to know. When I have a passenger (or I'm passenger) we are active users and report updates. The busier the highway the better (in terms of users).

WAZE saved us hours of delays on the way home from FL when 95 was closed due to an accident. We saw it before we got there and were able to detour around it and get back on north of the problem. Between WAZE and V1 we had zero issues.

I agree situational awareness is key.

The arrows are quite useful to understand from which direction the thread is coming. If it's behind - maybe downshifting to slow rather than illuminate brake lights. If ahead - obviously braking to slow. It's nice to know when the threat is passed (arrows go from ahead to side to rear). Useful info.

Been using the v1 since 1995 and it's never let me down once. The latest updates really eliminate most of the false alarms.

Paired with the Waze app and the YaV1 app (which gives it GPS lockout capability) it provides the best of both worlds.

V1 is simple and I love it. My new car had a K40 in it and I honestly have no idea how to use it. Once I figure it out, I'll comment

Been a V1 user for years but my Cayman S came with a 9500ci and I like it enough I just bought a 9500ix for the wife's RX. Lots fewer false alarms once it gets acclimated.

That's right, but I've yet to see a anyone make a constructive case for why those arrows are so incredibly valuable. They point towards the signal but how does that translate to value for someone who's speeding? Who in his right mind will continue to speed with the detector blaring while trying to figure out what to make of the message the arrow is sending? I'm guessing most will back off instinctively for a minute or whatever......arrows or no arrows.

I ditched my V1 in favor of the Escort 9500ci. I never found the V1's arrows to be anything more than entertainment whereas the Escort's GPS based lockout of false alarms is a godsend in the area I live.

Personally, I think they all stink. They false alarm way too often. Buy something else.

I have the 9500ix and am happy with it. However, I find the best way to avoid tickets these days is by using WAZE

I have a v1 and passport. The v1 does it for me better. I like the different times it uses for different radars

I totally agreed with you up until I had my V1 upgraded, and then I turned on their new filter. Before, it screamed so much it was truly useless.

I have been driving with it in the badlands of Northern NJ and points all around there and the new V1 with its filtering turned the detector from unusable to fantastic and the filters don't seem to reduce sensitivity of legitimate radar signals... I have been using V1s since 2000.

Are there better units? I gotta believe there is given the large number of years to develop the darn things.... they are just radios. But you won't go wrong with a V1.
