Default Frunk struts, do we have a DIY somewhere?

I need to replace my frunk struts soon! The lid barely stays up any more. It doesn't look difficult but there's always a German Grimlin (Germlin) waiting to send clips and springs hurling accross the garage. Where did you buy yours?

I bought mine at suncoastparts.com. Changing them takes only a few minutes. There are a couple of little locking clips that you have to release and they just pop right off.

Suncoast as well. I bought 2 but ended up that it was fixed after I replaced the first one. they don't necessarily BOTH go bad at the same time. Maybe buy just one and try it on both sides if the 1st side you try the new one on doesn't do the trick.

On my other cars, I always replace both halogen head light bulbs if just one goes. As Mfacks mentioned, it maybe only one that is suspect. To me, I'd do both. They may have a service life. I have 2o minutes to do a job, I like to get it done. Click click, one beer job. If one does not do it, then you'll have to wait another few days for another shock. Possibly another shipping charge. And another Beer. More calories.
Hey wait a minute, I contradicted myself. Another beer? Hmm

Thanks all. I like Suncoast. Not far away so shipping to me is fast.

You are absolutely correct, Big smoke....Had I not changed the defective one first, I would have changed both. I have the other one as a spare, now

Make sure you have someone holding the hood while you replace the struts...

First one is 4 minutes, second one is 2 minutes. There's a learning curve.

Once you look at the clip that holds the pivot in place it is self explanatory, You won't need a DIY.

Tip, use a 3/16" wide thin screwdriver, insert between clip and strut, force in until one side pops out.

Default Does strut replacement fix it?

My frunk keeps bonking me on the head, especially when cold. Will new struts really fix this or is it a design problem? I've read that some folks have replaced the struts and still get smacked on the noggin.

I replaced them on my previous 996 and it fixed the problem

Replacing the struts fixed the "cold weather bonk on the head" problem for me.

I did mine over a month ago and I still reflexively protect my head whenever I open the frunk!

Suncoast has great prices but their shipping costs are crazy. You may be better off at your dealers parts dept.

Oh BTW watch your paint. You do have to exert some force on the clips to dislodge them. Its an odd angle and your screwdriver can easily "pop out" on you. Wrap in duct tape or use a plastic one.

I did them on both my 997.1 C2S cars with a pair I found at Advance Auto Parts - $40 for the pair and slightly stronger (gas pressure wise). In fact, even with the bit of additional weight added from the Das Schild Hood Protection liner, the frunk still comes up stronger. They're not so strong that you think you're going to bend anything when trying to close it - perfect in my opinion. The package and strut both have a # 4031 on them. Both sets have been working perfectly for over a year - probalby closer to 2.

Thanks Pete! I'll look for those. I'm all over No shipping and instant gratification.

For me, it's not so much the head boink, which does suck, but it's the fear that the hood will slam down all the way (again) and might lead to damage of a $2,000 hood.
