Low mileage service interval question
I have had my 2009 997.2 CS for almost a year now and I drive it on weekends. My question is the service interval light is reminding me to get the car serviced in 20 days, I only put on 4000 miles so far this year. It went through a complete dealer service before I bought it, new brakes, fluid flush, last year. Should I heed the light and get the oil changed? It is under CPO and running fine with 53,000 on the odometer.
Thoughts???
Thanks,
Al

From what I've read on these forums, the service light is simply tied to mileage and/or time (1 year or 10K miles, whichever comes first). The computer doesn't "detect" that something needs to be fixed . . . it really is only tied to a clock and the odometer.
It's odd that Porsche decided to trigger the light at 1 year or 10K miles. If you look at the recommended service intervals in the owners manual (I'm speaking for the 997.1, so there might be a slight difference for the .2), none are supposed to happen at the 1 year or 10K mile point. That said, if you don't drive your car often, changing your oil once a year seems to be the popular consensus.

Thanks for the thoughts, interesting how Porsche just uses a simple maintenance clock instead of a cycle/duty clock. On my old BMW, the service interval light was designed to look at the # of starts, type of driving and miles. If you really "drove" the car the interval light would accelerate and could result in a service interval that happens before the 10,000 mile - 1 year interval.
Changing the brake fluid every two years has always been the norm for me regardless of mileage on my cars. Brake fluid gets contaminated by just sitting there sucking up moisture form the air.
Again, thanks!

What often happens when you buy a used car: Dealer services and changes the oil at whatever random mileage happens to be on the odometer. The service indicator is not reset because it is not currently activated because the car is not technically requiring service yet. Now you buy the car, and the service indicator light is still based on the time the prior owner last serviced it, not the time the dealer serviced it prior to sale. So the service light is out of sync.
I bought my car with 17,000 miles on it and fresh oil. 2 months later at 20,000 miles the light came on and told me I needed an oil change.

I have changed the oil 3 times in 21ooo kms. When I bought it at 9o,ooo, waterpump and oil at 98,000 and at 106,ooo.
Just turned 110,ooo kms. I'll run it up to 115-118,ooo for the next change.
If you car is under CPO, which you state, I would want dealer oil change history in their files. At least once a year. Thus covering your CPO bottom. To me once a year is good car therapy.

I have the same model year car and the same problem, only I've only managed to put 1k on the car in the past year. Dealer said I might as well change the oil and filter. I decided it was probably good motivation for me to do an oil change myself. Dealer turned off the service light for me.
