Default Is my dealer trying to rip me off on 20k service ??

My 2006 997S is in for it's 20,000 mile service. In addition to the standard service, the dealer is trying to up-sell me 2 additional service items that are apparently not included.

1. Brake Fluid System Flush $350
2. Injectors clean out $300

The service adviser is telling me these items are highly recommended every 12 months. And that if I don;t have them done, I could be looking at a huge expense down the road. If this is true, why would Porsche not have them listed in the service manual and included in the 20,000 mile service?

Is what they are telling me true? Do any of you fellow Rennlisters have these services performed? If so, how frequently ?

THANKS

I had them flush my brakes during my first oil change (about 4,000 miles). I don't recall the cost, but $350 seems a bit high.

My dealer already wanted $800 for just the regular service (ie, oil change), so I refused to pay another $350 for a fluid flush I find hard to believe is really necessary. Why do Porsches need something few other cars need? I've never had brake fluid problems in any of my cars, especially on a 2 or 3 year old car with only 20,000 miles. I think it is just another profit center to grab another few hundred dollars out of you.

What I find utterly amazing is how Porsche sells/markets these cars to be driven hard/tracked etc. They tell ya you only need to change oil every 20 , service is minimal, and that some (guessing here) 90% of all cars are still on the road, so they last forever right? Then they seem to convince everybody that you can't possibly own one of these cars without a warranty not to mention the service they tell you the car requires. I didnt get ripped off on the service of my Cayenne I literally got RAPED IMO at the 40K service. It now gets serviced at a local garage for about half what Porsche wants. My new C4S will go to the dealer as little as possible and when it does go I will tell them what it needs. Fool me once!

I hope they're providing the vasoline.

Seriously, brake fluid is something to consider changing if your environment and style of driving dictates it. I asked a friend of mine who is a race car driver now and (has been for over 40 years) and used to be into Porsches. He told me that for me to bother to replace my brake fluid at 2 years is a waste of money. He doesn't even have to do that with several of his race cars. Certainly, brake fluid is hygroscopic and will readily absorb water from the air, but assuming you're not in a seriously high humidity environment, it is overkill. We probably don't even push our street machines enough to warrant it either. I believe that your shop is overselling.

P-Nuts,

Some dealers buy this to help ensure the "comfort of their customers." I certainly hope your dealer is one on them!

Brake fluid every 2 years, coolant every 3 years. Fuel injectors..? Personally I would not pay 800 for a "20 K mile service" either. I have found a great independant shop. Cost is less than half on the average. Next time you go to dealer check to see if there is a sign on your back. I guess some folks just don't care about honest service charges. Good luck.

I wore my sign on my forehead when I went to the dealer for my 20k service.

I just mine done last month. If you can shop around and look for some service coupon, you should be able to get a MUCH better deal than that. I paid $449 for the 20k and $150 for the fuild change. However, I just received an coupon from Rector in Redwood City, CA for $399 for the 20k. The wife ML cost just as much or maybe high for those services. Again, you do need to look around. If not, $800 and $300 is how they NORMALLY charge you. Furthermore, I believe all of them do match prices.

1. Porsche does recommend it every 2 years and I think I paid less than $200 the last time. While I do agree it's overkill as on my other cars (DD like Toyota or GM), I don't normally flush it until I change the pads which is every 40-50k or 4-5 yrs. But since I intend to keep my Porsches a very long time so I figure that's a small price to pay in case something goes wrong with the brake system during warranty period. They have no excuse.

2. Fuel Injector cleaning, every dealers of every makes sell this service. I am not aware of any car requiring this service. As a matter of fact, I think it was on one of my Toyota owner's manual that specifically states not to use any of these additives to the fuel system as it may cause damage to the emission system. Besides, all gasoline has cleaning additives blended in.

I would do the brake flush as it's cheap to do (yourself). I maintain my own cars and do things more frequently than Porsche suggests. Again, I only have to buy the oil, filters, etc. plus I enjoy doing it.

I would never consider taking my car to the dealership for this kind of work. I don't think that they would take as great of care with my vehicles as I do, plus the outlandish charges are insane.

Find an independent. I think my brake fluid change to Super Blue was about $100.
