Shifter issue...
My shifter feels horrible... just awful. Even my wife made fun of it.
Looks like I have some sort of after market short shift kit. The white plastic block looking thing on the driver side appears to be broken where the metal rod inserts in to it. See picture. There is a bit play and slop because of this along with plastic on plastic sounds...
Can I buy this part separately? I haven't been able to find it alone anywhere online...
I guess the other option is to pick up the 997 SSK?

It really is awful. I did recently purchase the car so it was already in there. My stock shifter in my 951 feels much better.
Thanks for confirming... I'll order up a 997 ssk.

The 7.2 GT-3 shifter, cup cables and transmission shift levers w/o counterweights would be the way to do it if you are after the ultimate feel and plan to keep the car for a while.
Don't forget the trans and engine mounts too, big reduction in play if those are worn/15years old.

Pure junk... That might be somewhat exaggerated - especially considering the fact that Porsche themselves sold the shifter as an upgrade.
GT3 (short) shift lever (w/o counterweights) requires opening the transmission. The alternative to shortening the throw at the trans is shortening the throw at the shifter. Hence the B&M.
OP: it is hard to see from the pic, but if the white plastic piece is broken, you will have to buy an entire shifter assy. The only other alternative would be the Function-First shifter upgrade kit, as this contains a replacement for the white plastic piece: http://www.function-first.com/produc...right-solution
As 911mhawk says, the 997 shifter is popular as well.

just because porsche sold it doesnt make it a good option. they sold supple leather on a tiptronic as well and you can guess how well that was received

So which is "better"? 997 SSK or the GT3 shifter? I wanna do this mod this coming spring and I've always seen 997 ssk as the one to get but then I bumped into threads and posts about the GT3 shifter?

Perhaps I then upgrade that with the function-first kit later on... I do like a notchy, crisp shift which sounds like it'll provide.
To be fair, perhaps the B&M shifter would feel better if the white plastic part was not broken. I do like the "short throw" of it.
Thanks all for the posts!

[QUOTE=Brantley;13767142I will probably go with the 997 ssk which i found I can buy new for $370 shipped. [/QUOTE]
you wont regret it. the only out of the box crisper shifting would be a numeric at 6-800 a pop sans cables.
no added noise and a shorter throw? oem 997ssk. i got mine for 100. best hundred ever spent lol
add: though on old cars such as these are, as others have noted. check motor mounts and t-mount for wear replace as required re NVH and lateral slop.
