New to Texas and now I "need" a 996tt
Hi,
I just moved to the US, to the Houston area to be precise and I am looking for a 996 Turbo.I have read the forum for a while and I think I have a reasonable understanding of the weak points but I have only driven a 996 twice, one n/a and one Turbo (in dense traffic, so basically n/a as well).
Fixing cars is my hobby and I have a Durametric and most tools but I would like to meet up with the local enthusiasts and get some first hand advice. The Turbo I drove was heavily modified and ran like a bag of spanners (hard knocking, cold and warm, sounded like piston slap, Dealer tells me they all sound like this...I call BS. It would be great to hear what a healthy engine sounds like.
Also, I have just bought 2 "reasonable" cars as DD and after dealing with the local car dealers I'd rather buy from an enthusiast.
I am looking for
- coupe
- Manual
- stock as in always stock, unmolested
- a full history
- any color but black
I am originally from Germany and would like to take the car back in a couple of years and it will be a nightmare to get it through inspection if it is modded.
I am happy to pay a premium for a well kept car, looking to spend around 45K.
So, please let me know if you have one for sale or if you would be interested to meet for a quick chat.
Thanks, Eric.

Yes welcome its nice to read a sensible first post for a change lol. With your mind set you should be able to find a car that fits your needs, hopefully a member in your area with a nice stock car can let you check it out. Some very nice cars come up for sale here and on 6spd just keep a look out.

For the engine sound these engines can sound a bit ragged upon cold start. But they should not make any knocking noises or manifest piston slap noises.
A comeback is when someone tells you they all do that is to ask this then be demo'd with another car.
If there is not another car available what you can do is just go visit some other Turbos for sale and give a listen to the engine upon cold start and as it idles. You do not have to do a full car check out test drive and the whole used car check out bit unless of course you are really interested in the car.

996TT Search
Welcome to Texas and the best of luck with the hunt.
The stock, unmolested 996TT is a pretty popular buy right now. This time last year there were literally a dozen or so good candidates posted on the various web sites. Right now it's hard to find one or two.
I'd suggest finding some of the local PCA guys and tap into their network. They may know sellers and surely will know the preferred local Porsche service shops that you can get the word out to and visit.
I'm in the DFW area and I'll keep my eye's open for you.

I think finding a 996 Turbo that hasn't been modded in some way, have some hardware store parts somewhere in it, has been subjected to "MacGyver fixes", and that hasn't been run hard and put up wet on top of that, will be a challenge.

Thanks for the feedback. Just had a look at the Ebay car and at the terrible reviews for that shop. While the car looks nice there must be something lurking in the shadows...

2003 X50 Car in SD with less than 30K miles
Looks like a candidate. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not already sold.
Go to CarGurus.com and do a search for Porsche>911>Turbo and years 2002 through 2004.
$48,500 asking price
X50 with Adaptive Sport seats
