Tires for road and track
#16
There is no tire that does both well. Pick yourself up a spare set of turbo twists for $500 and get dedicated track tires. This is actually more economical as you won't be destroying your expensive road tires at the track. Since you've got to change brake pads for track anyway, it's no more trouble to switch your wheels while you're at it.

Agree, but also a good driver always outweighs good tires.
Tirerack has 315/30-18(GT2 rear size) Pirelli Pzero's on for $316 each right now...

Tires for road and track
Yokohama Ad08r
Great street tire, squeals at the limit for good communication and half the price of the michelins super sports.
Best time I ran at Watkins Glen was a 2:14.

Thanks
This will be the first time with the 996t that I will have sticky tires on the track and will definitely take it easy at first. Previously I ran Kuhmo summer tires at the track as they came with the car. They were easy to slide and made lots of noise when near the limit.
I have tracked Michelin Pilot super sports with my 987.2 boxster and they did great. They did get greasy if the run was much past 20 minutes.

Levinsje: if they got greasy after 20 mins, most likely your tire pressure was too high. as the tire heats up, the pressure increases, you should have let out some air. 20 mins is a long time to heat up the tires though, was it cold?

Danny,
Thanks for the info.
The temp was in the 70's at Roebling.
You are right that I did not let out some air after my first run.
It was a one day DE event paid by our local Porsche dealer and my instructor did not mention to check the tire pressure as the car was handling well. They became greasy only on the last run.
At VIR (with 996TT) I was planning on having the Yokohama AD08 tire pressure cold at 30/33 psi then immediately after my run bleed to 35/38 psi.
